Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor
SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor is utilized by the IT department to monitor Windows scheduled tasks on our automation servers and ensure that the IT team is notified if any tasks fail to run via text and/or email.
Server & Application Monitor is also utilized to monitor NGINX, PM2, and APIs on our Debian Linux web servers, and IIS on our Windows web servers.

Pros
- Notifies us of failures on scheduled tasks on our Windows automation servers and if it eventually starts working again.
- Maintains statistics on how chatty a service is on a server.
- A strong user community. If SolarWinds does not have an alert for a service, then usually you can locate one that another customer developed in the forums.
Cons
- Monitoring IIS, AD, Exchange, SQL will consume a lot of your licenses.
- Configuring the latest IIS is more difficult than monitoring other services.
- When purchasing a license for Server & Application Monitoring, we received 100 additional Nodes and volume to monitor as part of the purchase.
- The ability to monitor Windows scheduled tasks has been a great asset in monitoring the 3000+ reports/receipts that get generated every week.
While the decision to have SolarWinds over other providers was not initially mine, I have quickly come to like it due to the large thwack community, the SolarWinds Labs, and online classrooms. All of which are free to watch and utilize, plus you are rewarded by the SolarWinds team for learning more about their products.
