Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

SolarWinds is being used internally to monitor the health of our servers. We use it to monitor both the services being provided by these machines as well as the status of the machines themselves. It is an early warning tool in our enterprise that allows the team to fix minor issues before they turn into larger problems.
  • Classification of data and default displays.
  • Datacenter dashboard.
  • Remotely restart services that have failed.
  • Non Microsoft SQL support (On Prem).
  • Lack of in-program recommendations. (This option is performance heavy).
  • Appliances for VMware.
  • Reduced the amount of time techs spent checking separate tools for diagnostic data.
SolarWind's server and application monitor has a few advantages over an open-source Nagios install that make it worth the additional cost. The modules and plugins work the first time and don't need to be adjusted between upgrades. I don't need to go hunting through forum posts to see if a certain feature is broken in a new release or hope a volunteer developer picks up a bugfix ticket. Most features are more polished and user-friendly. I can introduce a new user to the dashboard and have them configure a new monitor without worrying they are going to run across an unpatched bug.
SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor is good if you are looking for a tool to monitor servers in branch locations. The server hardware monitoring is consistent and works with little to no additional configuration. If I see a green status we can be confident that a piece of hardware is functioning, at the same time any alerts are very accurate with little to no false alarms.
