Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

We use SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor to watch and alert on critical applications in our organization, as well as server hardware.
  • Out of box templates for common applications cover a number of the applications we use. Can easily create custom templates for our more unusual applications.
  • Integration with other parts of the Orion suite for better correlation of different items and dependencies.
  • The out-of-box support for some of the Dell hardware could be stronger; especially around storage.
  • Switching to SolarWinds has enabled us to much more swiftly discover and respond to system or application issues than our previous system. The lower administrative overhead involved has freed up considerable time for our network and systems admins for more business valuable tasks than tweaking monitoring.
We migrated from System Center Operations Manager to gain integration with better network device and configuration management & monitoring. It also enabled us to better deal with non-Microsoft applications that we use, as well as more useful alerts and notifications.
It's an excellent tool for monitoring common server hardware platforms as well as basic virtualization monitoring. The monitoring (performance and up/down) of common services and applications, along with the ability to customize them as well as create your own, lends a great deal of flexibility.
It's a bit more focused on Windows platforms and applications than others, but it does have support for them as well.
