Overall Satisfaction with Suse Linux

Suse Linux Enterprise is being used as our main Operating System for our most critical business application which is our SAP ECC Suite running on SAP HANA. We decided to go with the Suse option for our brand new servers, being it the most popular among businesses, but also because of the great reviews I have read. Suse has been installed on a bare metal and virtual server and it runs very smoothly on both. Our transactional speeds have been off the charts and we can't be more satisfied with the performance that our new servers running on Suse Linux have brought to the organization.
  • When it comes to ease of using / administration of Suse Linux, we found the learning curve to be very small, coming in from a Windows environment. We were able to handle our admin tasks quite well and without any interruption.
  • Response times of our server has also improved moving from an older Windows setup to the Suse Linux environment. We have not experienced bottlenecks in terms of performance of our SAP HANA and we can quickly run long running statements 300x faster with the help of Suse Linux and SAP HANA.
  • Finally, we observed that Suse Linux has more security features out of the box that what we had from our Windows setup. There's lots of great content available online for us to learn more about Suse Linux and how to implement it.
  • Our team just noticed that there are some issues we have on sharing of folders files between our CentOS and Suse Linux. The files on the shared folder have their permissions by default not available even for opening/reading even if the configuration was to give access to certain users.
  • I just wished Suse Linux had a control panel feature out of the box which enables my team to administer the entire server via the web browser, instead of installing a 3rd party add-on like Webmin.
  • As with any Linux distro available, GUI is still not as par with Windows server counterparts so part of the learning curve is navigating through the entire system, especially with the administration tools.
  • We just recently moved from a Windows server setup to a Suse Linux setup. Running through the entire process of computing for a Return on Investment would take us a full 2 years more based on current best practices in our company. So far, we have achieved our business objective of ensuring that our SAP is running as smoothly as possible.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and CentOS
We consulted our service provider on their recommendation and made some research ourselves. It was a hands down win for Suse Linux on both fronts so we readily chose Suse Linux for our operating system of choice.
Red Hat and CentOS would almost be of the same distro package, except Red Hat is commercial and CentOS is a community maintained distro. However, as what was gathered from various sources, Suse Linux is the best choice for our SAP HANA.
Suse Linux Enterprise would be the perfect operating system for any critical business system application like SAP HANA. Linux is really awesome for server and beats the Windows servers in terms of the overall value, cost, and features. It would be perfect for any size business and should definitely be in the shortlist of operating system for just about any business critical system.
