Overall Satisfaction with System Center Operations Manager

We are using Microsoft System Center Operations Manager as a data center monitoring system, but only for operating systems developed by Microsoft. We are also utilizing aggregated servers to monitor multiple networks across our internal Windows domain. Since SCOM provides some rudimentary monitoring metrics for OS-related services we are using these to stay aware of the performance, configuration, and security situation.
  • Release cadence of updates integrates well with our update process policy.
  • Performance monitoring of websites created with various SharePoint versions.
  • Support for monitoring of Linux OS is not mature enough.
  • Importing extended management packs is quite cumbersome.
  • Enhanced alerts raised by monitors significantly decreased our servers downtime.
  • Configuration by PowerShell scripts automated our deployment pipelines.
Microsoft SCOM has a quite unique range of features, and one worth mentioning is the graphing of live programs. We are heavily dependent on using it in case of extraordinary behavior from one of our monitored applications. Another thing which works very well in case of SCOM is setting priorities for notifications, which is designed in a very user-friendly manner.
We are very pleased with the support provided by the Microsoft System Center Operations Manager team. At first, we were quite hesitant to contact support, but the support team showed a very proactive approach and helped with a bunch of issues which would be much harder to overcome on our own, especially when deploying the platform for the first time.

Do you think System Center Operations Manager delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with System Center Operations Manager's feature set?

Yes

Did System Center Operations Manager live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of System Center Operations Manager go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy System Center Operations Manager again?

Yes

Microsoft SCOM should be used whenever you need enterprise monitoring on the server-side for your NTFS native environments. It is perfectly suited for Windows OS based systems, but will not work that well for Linux OS platforms such as SUSE or Ubuntu. For more advanced scenarios, Windows PowerShell makes additional configuration super easy and straightforward.
