Overall Satisfaction with Turbonomic (formerly VMTurbo)

Turbonomic (VMTurbo) was selected in order to alleviate issues arising from the constant need to manually adjust the virtual environment based on demand and growth. It allowed for peace of mind knowing that automated tasks based on given parameters were implemented in the background and at any time there were any concerns with running out of resources. To date, it has performed flawlessly.
  • Monitoring of storage
  • Monitoring of resource utilization
  • Dynamic Storage Migration when LUNs get near capacity
  • Finer control over the situations when storage migration is needed
  • A full HTML 5 management interface
  • Automatic self-updating in the background
  • Positive - reduced time needed to manage the VMware back-end
  • Negative - took an initial time to understand all the features and functionality as well as install all the modules for tie-ins to all the hardware components in the datacenter.
  • Overall great ROI!
It has certainly changed the manual processes and allows us to be confident that any adjustments and provisioning decisions do not need to be micromanaged and can happen now in the background with minimal or no supervision. That in turn allows us to focus on production rather than support.
While vCenter Server from VMware is a great product, it is designed to be more of an informational and warning system, rather than a proactive take action automatically when needed system. That is the core difference. Also, pricing wise it is more expensive than Turbonomic.
Based on the level of "trust" paced on Turbonomic, it can fully automate or partially automate tasks. The best approach seems to start with simple automation in order to understand the ramifications and once each stage is familiar, start to use more and more hands-off automation features.
