Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery
We have an onsite appliance that backups up all of our data center (virtual machines and physical machines), these backups are then replicated out to a cloud provider to another Unitrends appliance for offsite disaster recovery. This allows us to have good local backups that we can restore quickly if needed but also allows us to have an offsite recovery point if we were to face a total loss.
- Reliable - always works.
- Quick - It's able to do a restore, especially of virtual machines, very quickly and even directly on the backup appliance if needed.
- Cloud Options - Really useful as offsite disaster recovery.
- File Level Recovery - While it works well the interface could be better.
- Automated Verification - Again while it works it could be better and more "hands off."
- No tapes/backup drives - We used to take periodic backups offsite to a vault in case of a total loss but with this backing up to the cloud we no longer have to do this.
- It's expensive, so it has put more of a strain on our budget than previous solutions but it does offer more benefits as well.
- This allows us to have a full disaster recovery plan whether it be from a small loss/outage/etc. to a full blown data center loss/etc., we are prepared either way.

I've used the product we had previously from Infrascale, it was an old product so it was outdated and did not have near the features of our Unitrends setup, for example we had to take our backups offsite manually/physically for full disaster recovery and we do not have to do that now. We also evaluated Veeam prior to purchasing Unitrends, Veeam was more affordable but lacked a few features at the time we were looking for such as cloud backup and automated backup testing and verification.
