Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery
Used for DR at one large site. Backing up 20TB of data along with a handful of server images. Didn't get the appliance, went with the Hyper-V install on one of our servers. Also using their cloud product for off-site backups.
- Responsive interface.
- Knowledgeable and responsive support team.
- Straightforward configuration.
- Restore process is cumbersome and time-consuming.
- Cataloging of data to prepare for off-site fulls seems overly length, support has no fix.
- Agent updates require new fulls.
- I do sleep better at night knowing my data is (mostly) protected off-site, because as finnicky as the cloud backups are with Unitrends, they were worse with my previous solution.
- The ability to install on to our own server as opposed to purchasing a new appliance pulled additional value out of that server.

Unitrends was more involved to install and configure, but I have more confidence in its security with it being a Linux OS as opposed to just running on a Windows box. Acronis seemed to have more frequent failures on backups, even to local storage. It was also less configurable, especially in an environment with a dedicated 10Gbps backup network. Unitrends has no problem with multiple network interfaces. For the cloud, Acronis would have more failures that were very difficult to diagnose and repair. Their support was conscientious and responsive, but there was always a language barrier. Unitrends is not without its share of odd cloud backup snafus, but their support engineers are just as responsive and hard-working while being much easier to understand.
