Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Unitrends' backup system is used across the whole organization, for server, database, file backup and restores, for systems/servers security and disaster recovery purposes.
  • Disk to disk backup
  • Suppose to do bare metal backup
  • Supposed to allow simple restores
  • Better more reliable hardware
  • Better more reliable software
  • Better more reliable support services
  • It is mostly negative impact - fortunately we have not had any major data/system losses.
  • We have spent more time configuring and fixing Unitrends than actually benefiting from it.
  • Most system failures have been with the Unitrends hard drives, we have spent more time recovering Unitrends index, FAT, or other directories needed to use the Unitrends system itself.

Unfortunately Unitrends did not solve the problems we had, it just added to our problems by having to deal with the Unitrends issues.

We made a significant investment in Unitrends and it is difficult to abandon that in such a short time to reinvest in something else, but we can't afford operating without a consistent backup solution, we are now looking to replace it unless Unitrends can have a breakthrough in their HW/SW and support services.

We have had too many problems with Unitrends, including hardware failure, software not working as it should, system configuration, system speed, and working with tech support. As a backup appliance it has been much more unreliable than the primary systems.

Using Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

2 - Two people in our IT department are responsible for the systems backup and restore, It is primarily the role of an IT System specialist with the support from an IT systems Manager.
1 - IT Systems specialist, good understanding of the servers, data, backup scheduling ...
  • Ability and capability for high speed Disk to Disk backup
  • Ability for incremental, snap shot and bare metal backup
  • Ability to easily restore systems/data
  • We haven't been able to use Unitrends successfully - some occasional file restore
  • It failed to do a bare metal restore
  • It failed as a whole (HW/SW/System) several times
  • Just do the basic backup and recovery functions consistently and efficiently
  • Improve HW/SW/functionality and support
  • Trade it in for something that works
We have had too many problems with this system in the last 2-3 years. We are only staying with it because of the investment and lack of funding to replace it.

Evaluating Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance and Competitors

It seemed like they had the right product and features we were looking for but it only works in their labs and demos, not in real life production environment (at least not for us).
More reference check, require a 1-3 month in house demo/testing, review comments/reputation.
