Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

We originally purchased Unitrends as a supplement to Veeam to backup our physical servers but over the months have found it to be more reliable in backing up our virtual servers too.

We presently use the 714S appliance with 8TB of storage. Considering how happy we are with the appliance, I wished we had gone with the 814S or 823S for more storage capability.

We use the device to backup multiple physical servers at our main location.
  • The device is simple to use, particularly deploying agents.
  • The new interface is simple to use and much easier than our previous Symantec appliance.
  • Depup capability works really well. Noticed that it is more efficient than our previous appliance.
  • Although the new interface works well, some of the more advanced features of the device require you to log into the old interface.
  • Connecting our tape device and setting up backup schedules has been less than intuitive.
  • I wished the device was cheaper but that's the case with everything in life. The device is definitely value added.
  • We are finding that we are using less time managing the device once backups are set than we have with Veeam or our previous Symantec device. Daily emails with charts are sent so we know where backups stand everyday.
  • As stated previously, I'm very impressed with the depub process and notice performance improvements over our previous Symantec device which also had depub. This allow us to store more data.
We are very happy with our Unitrends 714S appliance. Our previous Symantec Backup Exec 3600 Appliance could not compare. Although the Symantec is older, the way it operated was cumbersome.

Veeam backups up virtual servers well but lacks the capability to backup physical servers was a big problem for us. The Unitrends has the ability to do both. Unfortunately, we are heavily invested in Veeam so migrating everything to Unitrends isn't practical for us right now.
The Unitrends device is well suited for small to medium organizations that require backup of both virtual and physical servers. Our device works well for us considering we are a non-profit and do not have the resources to invest into big backup systems or have a dedicated backup staff.
