Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance
We currently have 2 - Recovery 823's backing up our whole organization. I have split the total direct file backups between the 2 units and then replicated the backup from 1 unit to the other. This way I have the live production data, a direct file backup copy and a archive copy. I use Instant recovery for my "key" servers. This allows me to have my "Key" server back online within minutes as a virtual machine running on the Recovery 823. I also use Kroll to restore Exchange emails at the individual email level from the Unitrends Exchange backup. Restoring files is simple and quick. I can have accidently deleted files restored in minutes.
Unitrends as a company? I have not yet dealt with another company like them. Support is #1 in everyway. Level one (if they have levels) have always been able to help. Unitrends remotely monitor the recovery 823's and in most cases were aware of issues before I was and opened a support case for me. The recovery 823 have been extremely reliable, we have had hard drives fail, but again, Unitrends was aware before I was and had a replacement on route once confirming shipping.

Pros
- Backups rarely fail - typically a backup fail is due to extended power outages. Unitrends recovers automatically from a failed backup and the next schedule backup is successful
- Instant recovery - Invoking a virtual machine to replace your failed physical machine on the network is simple.
- Recovering emails
Cons
- I honestly can not think of a recommendation. I have always found the interface simple for the tasks I need to do.
- We require file recovery almost monthly - We have not calculated what that saved us, but I trust it was significant
Unitrends does not stack up against anything else I have tried. They are in a league of their own. HP / Microsoft / IBM, etc. can all learn a great deal from Unitrends support processes. Unitrends backup is the only backup solution that I have ever used that works with so little effort. The recovery 823's email me daily with reports for piece of mind. I manually check them weekly, rarely finding a issue. The only failures to date have been wear and tear on the hard drives and those are promptly replaced.
