Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

It backs up nearly all of our Office 365 email, SharePoint, and OneDrive accounts, and gives us the data retention that we are legally required to keep, as it allows 25+ years retention, which we can then keep on-site (another requirement for us).
  • The restore function is very easy to use, much more so than any other email backup solution I've used in the past; it's easy to search and view emails, etc in the console, and gives you a range of restore options, such as to another mailbox or PST, which is often required.
  • On the rare occasions that it does fail to backup, the errors are always clear enough that I can immediately see what the problem is and fix it.
  • A slightly better-advanced search feature would be useful; in the past, I've found the search options a little limited. Making it so that finding all emails to/from specific senders, with specific subject lines, etc would make restores much faster.
  • In the exclusions part of the backup job, it would be useful if accounts already excluded were easier to spot (in the selection list), so that you can update them more easily.
  • The ability to backup to a network share would be good, rather than having to use a local one.
  • The ability to retain on-site backups is a legal requirement for my company, so Veeam has provided this, which has, in turn, kept our customers happy and us legally compliant.
  • Veeam has also made historical searches much easier, due to the retention on the mailbox, and the ease at which data can be exported from backup, which in some cases has saved my company large sums of money.
We migrated from an on-premise email to a cloud email and needed a backup solution. As we used Veeam already for our regular backups, when we found that Veeam also did Office 365 backups, it was the obvious choice. We trialed the software fully prior to purchasing, and were happy with how effective it was, and how easy it was to use.
I have no problems with the software at all, I find it much more straightforward than other backup products that I have used in the past, with far fewer problems.
There have been several occasions where a former employee has neglected to properly file important documents that were sent via email, and therefore we have been required to restore a copy of their mailbox at the time to recover the missing information. This has assisted with a number of problems such as contract disputes with suppliers.
We have found this very useful, as often the restores are done from former employees, so being able to so easily forward recovered emails straight onto the user who needs it, or export to PST for viewing within Outlook has been incredibly useful. The end-users are also happy as they are able to get their required information much more quickly.
Being able to restore to so many different options is very valuable, this has helped with retrieving data, and also in cases where a user has needed to have their account recreated for one reason or another; I've been able to just run an immediate backup of the mailbox prior to the work, and then fully restore the contents to their new mailbox in a very short time frame.
Being able to look through the backups in such detail (i.e. even being able to open the attachments on emails) within the backup software before anything has actually been restored is also incredibly useful, and saves a great deal of time if you have to hunt through a historical backup job to find a lost attachment.
We use Veeam Backup and Replication at my main site, and have since rolled it out to a second site due to the effectiveness; however, this couldn't back up Office 365 data on its own.

Backup Exec I found to be a good product in the earlier versions, however, the newer ones became far too fiddly to use, and I didn't find them suited to my environment. We've also used Arcserve 16.5 as our backup software for a time but found this to be a very bad fit for our environment, and very fiddly to use, as well as very time consuming to maintain.

Veeam products have, in my experience, been much more user-friendly, and streamline the backup and restore process. Unlike when I had Arcserve as my backup solution, I barely have to administer my Veeam products at all, they just work.

On the rare occasion I've had to contact support for Veeam for O365, I've always received very quick and effective support.

Would you buy Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 again?

Yes

It's suited in any organization where they have a requirement to back up their online Microsoft environment, as the per-user license makes it affordable to smaller companies, and the convenience of being able to just pull your backups as and when required, rather than having to log tickets with Microsoft support is more than worth the money.

Using Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

5 - IT support; we use it for backup and restores
1 - We have a few members of the team who are trained on the use of Veeam for O365, and one (myself) who maintains the software in terms of troubleshooting, updates etc. It's quite easy to learn without any intensive training, and rarely seems to have any faults.
  • Protection of accidental deletion of data, as our configuration retains even permanently deleted items
  • Retention of data as per our customer contracts and legal requirements
  • Disaster recovery
  • It's been very useful when we have had issues with Microsoft accounts, where they have had to be recreated; Veeam allows a mailbox to very easily be restored into a new mailbox
  • Backing up products other than mailboxes, as it also backs up sharepoint etc, which isn't currently used at my organisation, but potentially could be in the future
It fulfils all of the requirements my company has for a backup solution, and personally I find it the most suitable product I've ever used for backing up mailboxes, due to the ease of restoring items.

Evaluating Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 and Competitors

We already had Veeam backup and replication, so being able to continue to use the same product for all of the backing up requirements we have within the company was very attractive as we already had confidence in the product.
I wouldn't change it; I'm happy with the decision we made. Based on past experience with other backup providers I've had over the years, including Backup Exec and Arcserve, I'm far more satisified with how Veeam works, the reliability, and the ease of use
