Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365
We use Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to manage the backups of our company wide 365 infrastructure. This is email, Teams, SharePoint and related files and identities. We were looking for a solution that would give us full coverage for this environment. Our main concerns included accidental deletion, data failures, ransomware and the ability to recover files deleted outside of M365 data retention windows. The last being the most common use case where requests for information in prior employee files or accidentally deleted files from "a long time ago".
- Once it is set up, it runs without intervention necessary
- The ability to backup the cloud to the cloud is important
- Their support has been great on getting setup and any issues
- Their setup documentation lacks quickstart guides and are overly complex - mainly because of the breadth of options available.
- No cloud management console
- Replacing our Baracuda solution with Veeam saved us over 60% in backup costs even with purchasing backup server hardware
- This is a software solution only so the type of hardware, storage solution and cloud storage costs will change the cost of the overall solution
- We prefer the ability to purchase and scale our own hardware over being vendor locked in an appliance
Our continued migration to Office 365 meant that our current backup solutions did not have the coverage we needed. We were moving large chunks of files and knowledge to the cloud and relying only on Microsoft's retention solutions. On-prem we had long term backup solutions in place and needed this same coverage for our cloud files. We were already using Veeam for our on-prem backups so using their O365 solution was an easy decision even though it is a relatively new product for them as we were familiar with their support and technology and the price of the solution is great.
We are now able to store long term backups. This has actually resolved part of our offboarding processes where we are not concerned with exporting M365 user emails to local storage (which is not a simple export with M365) and removing the user. We no longer worry about if they may have had a shared file that will be lost if we delete and won't be noticed past retention period. This has allowed us to keep clean our AAD and M365 environments without a bunch of disabled accounts and shared mailboxes.
We have used both the restore to Office 365 and restore locally. Both have worked as expected and the flexibility is a must.
There is a lot to be said about having such a powerful suite of apps for both local backups and to manage the backup and recovery for our entire Microsoft Office 365 suite. With the amount of development being done by the Veeam Team and the functionality available at a price point that is far better than the other solutions out there, we have no doubt we will be using Veeam solutions for the long term. They are very clear on upcoming releases and what features we can expect which is important in a rapidly changing atmosphere like M365. This is a major part in our continued movement toward cloud first infrastructure for our company.
Barracuda seemed like a workable solution, but for the price we were very happy to work with Veeam.
