Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

We use Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to backup our Exchange Online and SharePoint/OneDrive folders in a centralized fashion. While the SaaS offering from Microsoft is pretty solid as they are, the caution is never excessive, and we decided to take full advantage of the free tier (for a maximum of 10 users) and started taking daily backups of our Microsoft 365 assets.
  • Backup Exchange Online and SharePoint/OneDrive
  • Save on license costs for small teams
  • Recover from accidental deletions that occurred outside the recycle bin window
  • Have peace of mind about your data
  • The UI and recovery process runs pretty slowly on older hardware
  • After setup, the maintenance is pretty minimal (patches/updates and notification monitoring)
  • The main investment was the setup, since we used the free license
We decided to back up our Office 365 data because a consulting group told us it could be beneficial in some edge cases. We had some spare room on our backup server and decided to allocate it to Office 365 to add that extra layer of security. For us, the main use case is in the event some malicious user would delete our cloud data after gaining access to our accounts.
The logical structure is pretty clear, and the UI does a pretty good job of representing it. Having separate software for backup navigation and restoration is somehow painful (because of different updates every time). Also, working with outdated hardware results in pretty long waits for common operations, but that's to be expected, and it's also clearly signaled by a message on-screen during setup.
We actually never had to recover anything from Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 yet. We tried a couple of times for training and testing purposes, and the procedure seemed pretty quick and intuitive overall. Generally speaking, I feel that if we ever need to recover something, we'll be able to do it without any issue.
We only tried out the in-place restore in the original location. We never tried other options.
The free pricing tier is the best feature since it enabled us to use the solution in the first place. The UI is pretty intuitive, and the setup is easy. The automated notifications of jobs status are also handy. To me, the ultimate goal is to have peace of mind about your data.
We never reached out to Veeam support directly. Whenever I needed to search for some information on the web, I found the answer in the Veeam Forum, so nothing to complain about so far.
