Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We back up our production (primary infrastructure) hive via Veeam BR to a FreeNAS device. Some of these are virtual, done via vceneter tagging, the rest are physical, done via agents. We then copy the backup to another FreaNAS offsite.
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • File Level Restoring
  • RPO based tag reading across vcenter
  • SQL truncation
  • Better interoperability with AWS tiers
  • Better design for the UI or description - currently too difficult to guess what does what
  • Can be very error prone even if a little scheduling conflict takes place
Currently: 30+
Initially projected: 10+
More because our company grew
  • Scalable
  • Learning curve is smaller
  • Support is pretty great (though half the time)
Nothing. We just moved from Symantec to Veeam because it cost less.
Not yet. Cloud integration (AWS) is still pretty wonky at best.
Yes. We have added an array of very inexpensive NAS solutions, and they work as just as well as any premium-grade ones, thanks to Veeam. We managed to leverage this for both backup and backup copy.
Appropriate:
Large production hives, where it's mostly VC based

Inappropriate:
Small to medium companies where servers need to be active a lot, leaving little in a backup window

Using Veeam Backup & Replication

4 - Project Manager
QA Specialist
SQL Admin
System Administrator
1 - System/ Network Administrator, IT Specialist

Understanding of networking topology, backups, virtual infrastructure, SQL is needed
  • SQL Truncated Backups
  • Regular Backups of VMs
  • Backup Copy
  • Recovery of accidentally deleted files from file servers
  • Backup copy
  • Fast file level restore
  • S3 Offloading
  • S3 Direct Backup
Rife in features, but gets very, very technical, and sometimes needlessly so, which makes the learning curve very steep and ongoing.
Can do most things really well, though S3 support has been wonky at best

Evaluating Veeam Backup & Replication and Competitors

Yes - Symantec Backup Exec

We replaced it because Veeam came with a lot more features (vcenter level rpo tag) and the licensing was cheaper
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
Vcenter level features such as RPO tagging, streamlined a lot of management
Use it for a month or so, test out in a sandbox, push it far and see how that pans out.

Veeam Backup & Replication Implementation

It was a challenge we loved
Yes - Test with one VM
Implement with initial VMs
Scale out over time
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - Watching training videos again and again. Thinking of scenarios where it might fail, testing it out the best we can.
  • Learning the new systems

Veeam Backup & Replication Training

Absolutely. Self taught using manuals and videos means you are bridging the gap, not some statement made in a session recorded.

Configuring Veeam Backup & Replication

It is pretty scalable, but configuration is mired with technical brick walls
None. The design seems bad enough to warrant that change first.
No - there is no facility to customize the interface
No - the product does not support adding custom code
none, there is nothing available

Veeam Backup & Replication Support

Support is amazing when they get to it or you get the right people on it.
ProsCons
Knowledgeable team
Problems get solved
No escalation required
Slow Resolution
Difficult to get immediate help
Support doesn't seem to care
Slow Initial Response
Yes - we already do
They helped us configure a S3 offloading scale out repo.

Using Veeam Backup & Replication

Tough but fair. Has a lot of things, but not easy to get to. Not everyone's cup of tea
ProsCons
Technical support not required
Unnecessarily complex
Difficult to use
Inconsistent
Slow to learn
Cumbersome
Lots to learn
  • File level restore
  • Creating an ad hoc backup for existing VMs
  • S3 setup
  • setting up repositories not in house
  • managing backup copies
  • managing backups from older operating systems

Veeam Backup & Replication Reliability

It is very scalable if you know the advanced features and how it works. For example, RPO tagging means I can just use vcenter to manage backups from my vm stack
It is pretty stable, even so than most other solutions
It performs surprisingly well, sometimes even better than the listed / expected ones

Integrating Veeam Backup & Replication

Nothing much there.
  • vmware vcenter
  • amazon s3
vcenter tag based backup
s3 for offload testing (not working right now)
  • Onedrive
  • Windows backup and restore
No.
  • File import/export
  • Single Signon
Not much to it, just read, watch videos, repeat.

Relationship with Veeam Software

Sales team was phenomenal
They stayed pretty helpful through and through.
We didn't try, we had a target price, they matched it.

Upgrading Veeam Backup & Replication

Yes - lots of impacts, 10 let go of app aware processing for older os, which meant no support for dbs in our server 2003s
  • S3 integration
