Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We back up our production (primary infrastructure) hive via Veeam BR to a FreeNAS device. Some of these are virtual, done via vceneter tagging, the rest are physical, done via agents. We then copy the backup to another FreaNAS offsite.
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • File Level Restoring
  • RPO based tag reading across vcenter
  • SQL truncation
  • Better interoperability with AWS tiers
  • Better design for the UI or description - currently too difficult to guess what does what
  • Can be very error prone even if a little scheduling conflict takes place

Nothing. We just moved from Symantec to Veeam because it cost less.
Not yet. Cloud integration (AWS) is still pretty wonky at best.
Yes. We have added an array of very inexpensive NAS solutions, and they work as just as well as any premium-grade ones, thanks to Veeam. We managed to leverage this for both backup and backup copy.
Appropriate:
Large production hives, where it's mostly VC based

Inappropriate:
Small to medium companies where servers need to be active a lot, leaving little in a backup window

Rife in features, but gets very, very technical, and sometimes needlessly so, which makes the learning curve very steep and ongoing.
Can do most things really well, though S3 support has been wonky at best

Evaluating Veeam Backup & Replication and Competitors

Yes - Symantec Backup Exec

We replaced it because Veeam came with a lot more features (vcenter level rpo tag) and the licensing was cheaper

Vcenter level features such as RPO tagging, streamlined a lot of management
Use it for a month or so, test out in a sandbox, push it far and see how that pans out.

It is pretty scalable, but configuration is mired with technical brick walls

Veeam Backup & Replication Reliability

It is very scalable if you know the advanced features and how it works. For example, RPO tagging means I can just use vcenter to manage backups from my vm stack
It is pretty stable, even so than most other solutions
It performs surprisingly well, sometimes even better than the listed / expected ones

Yes - lots of impacts, 10 let go of app aware processing for older os, which meant no support for dbs in our server 2003s
