Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We're a law practice with ever-expanding data sets to protect. Veeam Backup & Replication allows us to protect that data at a reasonable cost and complexity. It allows us to meet our RTO and RPO objectives and helps everyone sleep easier at night.
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Virtualized workloads
  • None of the above
  • None of the above
  • Protects our data with nightly incremental backups
  • Allows for quick restoral of data if needed
  • Can create new 'full backups' from data sets without having to perform a full backup
  • The interface is a bit clunky...I preferred it before they 'fisher priced' the interface
  • Support can be problematic, as it takes a while to get someone to respond to a ticket; that MAY be related to Covid
  • The cost has gone up considerably in recent years.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

No

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

We're protecting a single physical server with roughly 66 TB of data. That's what we expected to be protected, though the data set has grown (as projected)
  • It's greatly increased our recovery time for accidently deleted or damaged files.
  • It's greatly increased our recovery points.
I started working with this company recently. My predecessor was doing manual backups with robocopy jobs to NAS units. I was the trigger for changing.
We have not and have no interest in it currently. Our leadership is uncomfortable with privileged information leaving our premises, so he's generally opposed to the cloud.
We have not, as all data is on the single physical file server at present.
We're currently using it with physical servers, which doesn't seem to be the expected situation. It works, but all the documentation and the support people expect you to be running in a VM environment. We will be switching to VMWare shortly, but it's a bit annoying to have to keep correcting people and translating for our actual situation.

I've used other products that are better at protecting the data (faster backups, more recovery points), like the Datto Siris, but they're much more expensive. To protect the same size data set with Datto would require about $50,000 purchase and $5,000 monthly expenses.

Using Veeam Backup & Replication

2 - IT Support
2 - Both are full time IT Support
  • Recovery of accidently damaged or deleted files
  • Projecting growth by easily seeing how much data is changing
  • Ransomware protection
  • Sadly, we're pretty vanilla. Just using it to perform nightly backups and restore the occasional 'oops'
  • Again, we're happy with the basic functions
We're happy with the product and plan on continuing to use it. It does what we need it to.

Evaluating Veeam Backup & Replication and Competitors

Yes - Manual processes and BATch file copies
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Prior Experience with the Product
I've used Veeam for 20 years. When I joined the organization late last year, I suggested it as a better alternative to the manual processes in place.
I actually didn't do much 'evaluation'. I put the eval version in place and started setting things up, then called to purchase.

Veeam Backup & Replication Implementation

The initial backups took FOREVER. We also can't do synthetic full, because they take a week or more.
Change management was minimal - The prior backup process was manual, and I wasn't given any documentation or training on it. Rather than trying to figure it out, we just deployed Veeam and setup three backup jobs (due to the size of our data set). We then started the jobs and hit the ground running.

We're running a single physical server, with two data volumes (35 TB and 25 TB) that are being protected.
  • The times for full backups. Each of our large data sets took a week or more.

Veeam Backup & Replication Training

I have used the product in the past, but not very recently. It wasn't horrible, but did require a lot of looking things up online for how to do things.

Configuring Veeam Backup & Replication

I actually think the product is starting to try to be too much for too many people. It's a great backup product, but I fear that with them trying to protect SaaS data too, they may loose focus on the servers, which is what I need them for. Luckily, i haven't seen that happen yet.
No, we just followed any online guidelines from Veeam.
No - we have not done any customization to the interface
No - we have not done any custom code
None. For us, it's largely a set and forget product. We get the daily notifications of the backups, and only get into the program itself if we have to do a restoral, or if there's been some issue or change that we need to make

Veeam Backup & Replication Support

Perhaps it's a remnant from Covid staffing issues, but it seems as though the entire support process takes longer now than it used to. It's not uncommon for a lower level support request to take more than a day before I receive the first human response. That said, I haven't had to use support often, so it's not been a major issue.
ProsCons
Good followup
Problems get solved
Kept well informed
Support cares about my success
Slow Resolution
Escalation required
Difficult to get immediate help
Slow Initial Response
No. We're a non-profit and couldn't justify the cost.
When I started with this organization and was starting the purchasing process, they had my predecessors predecessor on record with the company. She is deceased, so it was difficult to get the quote process working so we could purchase the product. The sales agent drug in support folks to get access to the account and get things changed over properly and we were able to get the quote.
Then, the actual reseller was sluggish to produce the quote and process the purchase... the sales agent again helped out getting things finalized.

Using Veeam Backup & Replication

The interface is counter-intuitive and clunky. Once things are setup, however, it's pretty decent.
ProsCons
Feel confident using
Do not like to use
Unnecessarily complex
Difficult to use
Inconsistent
Slow to learn
Cumbersome
  • Sadly, none. The interface is very clunky and required a lot of looking things up.
  • Most things. The interface is very clunky, and needs to be redesigned. It required a lot of looking up reference material to figure out where something was. Luckily, that was mostly a setup issue.

Veeam Backup & Replication Reliability

It's available for SaaS products, single workstations, up to VM Clusters. It's very scalable.
We've had no application errors or unplanned outages, so we're quite happy with the product
It seems sluggish, but that could be a function of our equipment and data set. Restorals take about 15-20 minutes to process before we can choose the file and actually restore it.

Integrating Veeam Backup & Replication

Relationship with Veeam Software

The sales agent was very helpful.
Support appears to be a bit overwhelmed and responses take a while. That said, they are happy to help when you actually get someone.
We didn't negotiate. Since we're a single server environment, we took list prices.
