Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is being used as the enterprise backup solution for all of our backup needs, currently we are using this to backup file shares for the NAS, our Vmware Environment, our physical server environment and our database server environment. We also use it to manage our tape library and our tape environment for all daily and monthly backups.

Pros and Cons

Upgrades are typically easy and normally have either no issues or very few that are easily resolved (wait a month or 2 before upgrading)
Using accelerator for the vm environment works well, and file level restores have been successful
Full vm recovery has worked every time
Backing up a physical server and restoring to a vm works as described
GRT Exchange backups are pretty easy, to setup
File level restores are simple

GRT Exchange restores using the ip less dag take a long time to browse for files to restore
VM file level restores dont work without a client installed, but the client is not needed for the backup
GRT backups can eat up a lot of time for the restore
Full VM recovery works but typically you have to remove the nic, and play around with other settings for it to work

Return on Investment

It saves us money when compared to the cost of other solutions
We can back something up and I have faith that I can restore it
It is reliable and works well but must be managed

Alternatives Considered

Veritas NetBackup Appliance

The software versus the appliance is about the same, the appliance is more convenient in the fact that it is an all in one solution. Using veritas netbackup you have to build out a backup environment with multiple media servers and a storage target for offloading to disk or offloading to tape. Using the appliance versus using just the software means you don't have to build out an environment as it comes with the appliance.

Support Rating

Support is pretty good but it is split between America and outsourced companies so it is hit or miss sometimes. I have actually had to argue with the outsourced support as they sometimes have no practical experience using the software which makes troubleshooting difficult when they have no practical experience using the system.

Veritas Netbackup does work as it is described but sometimes there is some setup information that is not necessarily published or is hard to locate for proper setup. Support is mixed between America and outsourced locations. It is well suited for vm backups using accelerator which speeds up all the vm backups by not sending duplicate data to the storage location.
