Overall Satisfaction with VMware ESXi

VMware ESXi is currently being used to maximize the capacity of cloud servers where they can be logically segmented into providing other services instead of just one server per service, I can have several separate virtual servers running on one physical host. The product is very stable and provides an excellent return on investment.
  • Logically assigns a server's resources into whatever demand the individual service/virtual server requires.
  • Being able to configure virtual switches with different network connections across how many ever network interface cards the server can support. You can easily configure back-end only traffic between virtual servers without fear of exposing it to the internet.
  • Being a type 1 hypervisor, it is very lightweight and does not require having to be run on top of an existing mainstream operating system.
  • Not necessarily for production, but for testing/development, it would be beneficial if ESXi supported built-in software raid.
  • Wish there would be better integration for SSD-based caching for the datastores.
  • More responsive HTML5 web-based GUI.
  • Positive aspect includes the savings of electricity costs due to not having to keep underutilized servers running.
  • Another positive aspect is being able to recover the physical space previously occupied by standalone servers.
  • As the product is priced per physical CPU, you want to make sure you size your ESXi host server accordingly as to not undersubscribe its capacity.
VMware ESXi is the defacto standard of managing virtual machines and has the best hardware compatibility in reference to other companies offerings. Its robust platform is well supported and can easily accommodate most any use case. The number of 3rd party products that work with ESXi was the final selling point of why we went with VMware.
Great tutorials are available on every subject of virtualization and how to accomplish various tasks using ESXi. The product documentation is provided in an easy to understand manner. Rarely do we have a need to contact support as someone has already written an article or a video about a topic we may have questions on.

VMware ESXi is excellent at consolidating physical workloads into virtual machines. Being able to assign dedicated resources helps ensure that the virtual machines have enough processing power. With its broad hardware compatibility, it supports most enterprise systems including network and storage adapters out of the box. Even though the virtual machines can be logically separated, some scenarios require physical server segmentation due to various regulations so that the chances of security breaches can be minimized.
