It is a cloud-based accounting software targeted specifically to the needs of small, often service-based businesses who do not have advanced accounting needs. Many of the vendor's customers use the software exclusively for time tracking and invoicing, although the product does include bookkeeping capabilities.

Invoicing is the functionality most praised by FreshBooks users. They particularly like features such as recurring invoices, branded invoices, automated reminder emails for unpaid or late invoices, and the ability to see when clients have viewed invoices.
Though some reviewers use FreshBooks for general accounting, most use it exclusively for invoicing and time tracking, because bookkeeping or general ledger features are lacking. Particularly, it's difficult to track income. Some integrate it with other accounting software such as QuickBooks or Xero.
