We use 7Shifts as our comprehensive labor management solution at each of our restaurants. Our management team use 7Shifts to develop, maintain shifts and schedules for all staff, communicate restaurant and organization announcements to all staff, track revenue and labor cost metrics, and facilitate Time & Attendance. As a truly cloud-based platform via the website and the mobile app, our management corporate team can effectively and efficiently manage the workforce both remotely and at the restaurants in real-time. During COVID, 7Shifts has responded to our evolving needs and instituted health and safety assessment tools as part of Time & Attendance that have enabled us to comply efficiently with local jurisdictional guidelines. 7Shifts has become a valuable and indispensable platform for us.

Our entire organization -- one resort and another standalone destination property -- utilizes 7Shifts to help keep our staff organized and informed. We have found that 7Shifts is easily the best method of communication when we have site-wide announcements and emergencies. Our staff all truly utilize it and we have come to rely on it company-wide and individually in each department. The scheduling aspect has accounted for reduced turnover and helped us to institute policies for call-offs and shift pickups that are otherwise difficult to enforce in this day and age (no one wants to make a phone call!). We have recommended it time and time again to colleagues and others in the hospitality industry as the leading scheduling and communication software.

  • When creating schedules I wish there was a way to remember the last schedule you were on instead of ordering them in alphabetical order.
  • When working on a schedule, again when you revisit it, it alphabetizes the employees instead of keeping them in the order you add them. This is pertinent for our business because we're reservation-based and work off of a rotating schedule where the lowest ones are called off if there are not enough reservations.
7Shifts is the ideal scheduling software for the hospitality industry, where there are multiple departments and where everyone needs access to everything across the board.
  • 7Shifts has helped to reduce turnover, due to being able to hold staff more accountable.
  • It has also reduced HR costs due to some of the functionality (marking no shows, sick, being able to keep track), referencing past schedules, and keeping track of sent communication.
We used When I Work when it first debuted, but 7Shifts technology is much more advanced than When I Work's was at that time.
I love the ability to leave a chat message to be answered. That makes it so much easier when you're dealing with a busy schedule and don't want to wait on hold.

7shifts is used for our entire company, of which we have 3 operating locations and one soon-to-be open location. They are all variations of restaurants, bars, and brewpubs. Meaning we have a myriad of departments including management, front of house and back of house. And within those, split between job duties such as barista, expo, bartender, shift lead, etc. 7shifts helps keep communication open and easily accessible between departments.
  • Staff can easily access fellow team members' contact info (phone & email).
  • Staff can easily enter availability or time off.
  • Managers have a log book to share issues or updates from the days’ shift so quick action can be completed easily if needed.
  • Being able to communicate with managers only, with a specific department, or with the entire staff easily is very helpful.
  • Sometimes notifications don’t clear when checked; or it’s hard to understand where in 7shifts the notification is coming from (log book, schedule, etc).
  • Would be nice to add photos to post.
7shifts is very helpful when staff needs to trade or give up a shift. And it makes it a quick and easy process for the manager and staff involved. It’s also a great way to share information between multiple departments and staff and managers. I can’t think of a scenario where 7shifts isn’t appropriate for our use, as long as the staff operates it within business code. Which we don’t have issues with at our locations.
  • Streamlined communication for faster action when needed (fix broken items, etc).
  • Supports quality of life for staff as schedules are easily posted and viewed.
  • Supports quality of life for managers with a managers-only forum to communicate staff issues and handle in a timely manner from shift to shift.
Slack is great for communicating and you can add photos, but 7shifts seems like it was built for our business model (restaurant/bar). It’s easy to use by staff and management and can be mobile or desktop. 7shifts also has the best prompt questions/bubbles that keep you focused on what to include in shift reports. As well as the schedule, availability and time off request being made so simple and easy to use for staff and management.
If never had any issues with 7shifts, truly has worked flawlessly for my entire use of the program.

7shifts is not just great for scheduling but also serves as a direct line of communication with staff. What's really nice about that is being able to send something directly to one employee, an entire department, or the entire staff. Being able to customize your alerts is also helpful; I can see immediately when someone releases a shift or puts in for time off.
  • Easy of scheduling: allows setup templates
  • Communication with staff: an employee directly or my department
  • Affordable: offers a lot of functions without being overly priced
  • iPhone app: I'm not able to change the preset time frames so I have to manually enter the shifts
  • When working from the app it doesn't block out the time off as it does on the desktop so I have to make sure I haven't approved anyone first before I start doing the schedule
This product is well suited for businesses of all sizes. Its ease of use makes it a valuable resource for not only management and ownership but also for the staff. Using it to communicate with staff when a new beer is being tapped is key for us. I can message the entire staff and they can respond to the group with any questions or comments.
  • Doing the schedule from the iPhone app is not as simple as the desktop or iPad platform. I'd like to see it more streamlined.
For me, 7Shifts has the same amount of functionality, but for a much better price. The app functionality of 7shifts was easier to navigate and allowed me to do more than HotSchedules. I've recommended it to several other local businesses who have implemented it as well and had great luck.

The software is being used to its full potential. We use it for scheduling, the manager logbook, forecasting, and reporting. We also rely on it heavily for communication and announcements. It is used by HR, all operations (from entry level to management), directors, and ownership.
It addressed largely the communication issues we were having. First off, scheduling and issues along with it like swapping, days off, requests availability, etc. are seamless and all in one place with a good audit trail. It also helps by quickly communicating with staff (they have a great mobile app) so they can dial, text, or email on demand from their employee profile. WE LOVE the manager log book it keeps all daily issues in ONE place and can actually be queried for patterns later on (i.e does John Doe call off every football Sunday). Their customer service is FANTASTIC, comprehensive and a real human being! We use a lot of software but this is by far my favorite in terms of versatility, ease of use, no technical issues, and easy to implement.

Great for a high volume restaurant or F&B outlet with high turnover and high demand communication needs (like us). I think it may not be as useful for an office setting (but I have no experience in this area).
  • Positive: Less call outs/ and missed communication due to internal conversations that were never communicated. For example, employees tell manager A they are not coming but Manager A does not tell manage B and C.
  • Positive: Manager log book has helped multiple departments stay in touch and on the pulse of the floor operation. Departments like HR, events, reservations, AP/ AR, etc. are not empowered to be more proactive
  • Labor and sales are tracked and can be forecasted which has helps us schedule SMARTER
I prefer the customer service, implementation and the constant add-ons and improvements 7shifts make in comparison to Hot Schedules.
