We use IBM Watson Campaign Automation (WCA) ourselves as well as for reselling and offering implementation and best practice consultancy. It offers comprehensive integration options to CRM solutions such as Sugar and Salesforce, both with native integration and via a comprehensive suite of APIs, allowing us to automate and have an easy vision of our own marketing and lead generation activities.
  • Very easy to learn with extensive on-demand, self-paced e-Learning, a knowledge base to query other users' learnings and responsive 24/7 support via a portal.
  • Intuitive interface; work from left to right to join up data (contacts), email creative, campaign automation, reporting and integrated products.
  • Great automation capability: set up and automate the easy stuff quickly, allowing you to pay more attention to the hard stuff.
  • Easily import and personalise your HTML in the WYSIWYG editor, simple A/B/C/D testing process with automated execution to the winner and capacity for complex personalisation and dynamic emails creation.
  • My clients are crying out for a drag and drop email editor. While the WYSIWYG editor is fine, this would be a huge win for IBM!
  • The inbuilt reporting suite could do with an overhaul and to allow users to build more customised reports. Some elements of the reporting could do with better filtering options as well, or start with a filter rather than loading everything in the first instance.
  • Would be good to be able to make more assets portable between databases and have an 'asset import mapping' process to re-point/configure anything that doesn't match the original source.
This is a great product and its top feature to me is how easy it is to get up and running with it. You can learn the basics easily via the on demand eLearning and quickly be automating simple email campaigns. So if you're a small team with limited IT resources, you can get up and running with automated campaigns from a simple spreadsheet and some HTML in no time.
  • You get a lot of features out of the box as standard.
  • What you can't get do of the box, you can either purchase as an add-on or execute via some API development.
  • Automating simple campaigns easily frees up more time to work on more complex work.

I've used IBM Campaign and Apteco PeopleStage and find WCA significantly easier to get to grips with. Simplicity comes from the presentation of the data to the tool and an intuitive UI. IBM Campaign has significantly greater ease of access to and manipulation of ad hoc data sources, but that ease can lead to excessive/unecessary data being drawn in and laziness around preparation.
  • The UI is very intuitive
  • HTML can be easily imported and personalised in the WYSIWYG editor
  • Great multi-channel automation capabilities
  • Few minor flaws like switching between HTML and Design view in WYSIWYG editor have been around for a while and need fixing.
  • Sometimes when a program (campaign automation) is particularly lengthy and complicated it can be difficult to figure out what is happening. Also there is no save function, so make a mistake and you may have to spend a while putting it back together again!
  • Reporting needs modernising and introduction of greater customisation capablities.
Very easy to use, meaning you can save time by automating all the easy things that would otherwise be manual. Great, intuitive UI. Everything just feels really easy to do

We were currently using SilverPop for mass mailing and global program campaigns. We are now switching to automated lead nurturing as well as mass mailing. We are using automated tracks and lead scoring.
  • Very powerful tool for mass mailings, combining queries and only emailing against one record
  • Very good at testing email before sending - health of email
  • Cannot query on lead source description - a big need for SafeNet
  • Templates are kludgey and buggy - fonts will be all one but are mailed looking completely different. It is difficult to fix unless you know html code.
  • Syncing between SFDC and SP is slow. not sure if it's an SP issue.
Are templates easy to set up and troubleshoot - is interface something that is easy to utilize. Can queries easily be set up. Is the synchronization seamless between SP and SFDC.
  • we have not experienced any currently but moving to lead automation and lead scoring could change that.
  • i'm not sure how increased employee efficiency would ever be a benefit b/c lead importing and visibility, along with setting up email templates is quite cumbersome.
I have heard from other colleagues there are much easier to use products in the market that essentially do the same thing.

Silverpop is being used solely for email marketing within our online marketing team. It is used as a marketing database for new leads so that we can develop automated and ad hoc campaigns. Additionally, we use the web tracking functionality to get deeper insights into how subscribers are interacting with our website after clicking a link. We also use behavioral targeting to send messages based upon opens/clicks/interactions.
  • Dynamic Content - Silverpop's dynamic content system is the best I've used in my career with multiple systems.
  • Salesforce Integration
  • Segmentation
  • Automated Campaigns
  • Updating automated messages, you have to disable the automation > make the changes > reconfigure > reactivate
  • WYSIWYG editor is horrendous. We hand code all of our HTML, but if you simply open a piece of dynamic content it adds unnecessary code that you have to rip out if you make tweaks
  • Working with support can be tedious and nerve racking. Too often rather than investigating an issue they try to blame it on something else and waste time. Also you have to give them permission to enter your account. Which is also a good thing security wise, but it adds additional time to figuring out any issues. Very problematic when facing something urgent.
  • The program (or drip campaign) tool could use greater functionality so that you can better create paths. Similar to how Aprimo has it setup within their system. Instead everything is very linear in Silverpop.
For anyone that isn't ready for a more robust automation system like Marketo or Eloqua I think Silverpop is a great solution. Especially if you need to be able to integrate with Salesforce. After using multiple systems and reviewing demos of others I think they have a good product. But have some clear areas they need to work on for improvement. Support being one of them.
  • Increased efficiency
  • Better audience segmentation to increase response
Aprimo
Eloqua
ExactTarget
Marketo
Publicaster

Silverpop was implemented prior to joining my company; however, I think as an ESP they stack up very well against the competition. And after reviewing ExactTarget twice I would pick Silverpop hands down. I think it is missing some functionality when being compared to Eloqua.
Unless we make the decision to switch to a greater automation tool like Marketo or Eloqua I anticipate continuing to use Silverpop for the foreseeable future.

The Salesforce Integration support team is fantastic. I'd give them greater than a 10 if possible. The rest of the support team can be extremely frustrating to work with. Too often they try to blame something obscure and refuse to escalate or look into the issue. And on occasion when you find system glitches they don't seem to care about fixing them.
Yes
Simply put, no. Rather than fix the issue they ask you to go to their community and put it in as a feature request rather than acknowledge their own issue and correct it.
The Salesforce integration team is amazing and know their product front to back. They've been extremely useful in diagnosing issues and assessing how to better set up our integration.
  • Dynamic Content
  • Querying the database
  • Sending a message
  • Updating dynamic content (WYSIWYG adds unnecessary code)
No
In my opinion the web training for Silverpop is very comprehensive and the system itself is pretty easy to pick up if you have had past experience with email marketing systems. If this is your first foray into email marketing it may be a bit tougher to learn than the entry level systems like mailchimp or constant contact.
