I use Illustrator almost every day. I am primarily an animator, but many of the project files I am sent are Illustrator files or can be easily manipulated within Illustrator. It allows me to work with files and prepare them for animation, as well as creating new art files when needed.
  • Illustrator has tons of options for creation. I feel confident in saying that if you can dream up any sort of 2d design, it can be recreated within Illustrator.
  • Illustrator can handle .pdf files and other types of image files. I find this helpful when I'm working on a number of different file types, so compatibility isn't usually an issue for me with Illustrator.
  • Illustrator has many tools that are easy to use once you've learned some basic understanding of how they can be used. The software is incredibly complex and offers many ways to accomplish whatever design tasks you are interested in.
  • Illustrator offers pretty good compatibility between itself and other Adobe programs, so I've found that to be a great thing when working within the Adobe Suite.
  • It feels as if Adobe products are all created individually, and as if all of the developers work in different parts of the world. Even though there are great advantages to using these applications in tandem. They don't share keyboard shortcuts, and there are other things that work one way in one program, but work differently in Illustrator.
  • Illustrator is complex and has an incredibly steep learning curve. I've been using it for the last 6 years or so, and I feel I've only scratched the surface. Adobe does an OK job of providing tutorials, but you have to look for them online, and even then, you might find better tutorials on YouTube.
Illustrator is great when you need to design 2d pieces, especially if you are animating or printing.
  • I pay for the Creative Suite monthly, and it's great for me, but I also am in the hole for subscribing monthly. It's a boon and a curse.
  • Illustrator is super necessary for my line of work, so for me, it's essential and helps me become a better professional.
Don't let the rating fool you. Illustrator is incredibly usable, but it's not new-user-friendly. You are going to need to spend a long time being tutored or teaching yourself this program. It's excellent once you learn the ins and outs, but it's a long, long road to get there.
Adobe does an OK job of providing online tutorials for using different tools within Illustrator, but honestly, you'll find better or just as good tutorials elsewhere.
I use the Adobe Suite in tandem with one another. They are all useful in their own ways.

We use Adobe Illustrator CC daily for our design work within our creative services division. We create new vector graphics and edit others for use in documents, websites, apps, and other digital marketing tasks. We could not do our job without it as the creation of vector images is necessary for us.
  • Edit and create vector images.
  • Connects with other adobe products.
  • Useful for changing existing images.
  • Backward compatibility of file formats.
  • Save directly to creative cloud.
  • Simplify panels.
We often get bad raster images of logos and are able to trace and recreate them as a vector which is needed to make use of them in new projects. We also often need to create new icons for applications and it is the only good way to do this. We also are able to export in a wide number of formats.
  • It gives us an edge in graphic design over creatives who don’t have it, so we can charge more.
  • It works well with other Adobe products which saves us time.
  • It allows us to fix other people’s vector graphics easily.
There are not a lot of competitors that range an evaluation, likely because of the product's age and maturity. I’ve used only other Adobe products to do a few of the same things illustrator does, but really nothing really compares to it.
Documentation of adobes products has always been lacking. They seem to rely on online communities which are painful to search and find solutions in. Illustrator is no exception as little usable official documentation is available online and contacting support is a slow and often frustrating process. Adobe support is a constant problem across all mainline products.
Illustrator has become easier in recent years to use with more intuitive tools and controls for them. Illustration software has improved but Adobe Illustrator has kept up and keeps the edge with its extensive toolset. Newly added collaboration tools with Adobe make it even better and the expectation is that is to continue.

We use Illustrator for designing vector graphics and branding materials in conjunction with other programs in Adobe's creative suite. It is used mostly by our designers and helps us produce large format graphics for marketing materials. We use it for both internal and external projects and we consider it a core app we use to conduct business.
  • Managing vector formats is made pretty easy.
  • Pro tools for creating digital illustrations.
  • Robust features for complete control over your projects.
  • You can jump in as a beginner, but it takes a long time to master some of the more advanced tools.
  • It's a resource hog. If you're running multiple programs, make sure you have enough resources.
  • Artboards can be confusing at first.
Illustrator is great for handling vector artwork. We use it for digital illustration, branding, iconography and anything else that would be helpful to create as a vector. I think it excels in handling artwork for print. I know many people also use it for designing interfaces, but I personally think it is less well-suited for that application.
  • Illustrator is a digital standard and it would be difficult to operate without it.
  • It allows us to take existing assets and easily fit them into our design workflows.
  • The trace tool can save hours of digital illustration if trying to recreate graphics.
The learning curve is steep and it's not always obvious why a path is behaving a certain way, but it does a great job of presenting a set of tools to the pro user for artwork creation. Of all of Adobe's Creative Suite products, Illustrator is the one we ask ourselves the most internal "How to" questions about. We can usually figure out a path forward, but it's not always an obvious answer.
We haven't ever needed to contact Adobe support for Illustrator. Once installed, it performs how it should and updates when expected. We certainly have questions about how certain features work sometimes, but we usually are able to answer those questions internally before needing to reach out to the support team.
Illustrator is the industry standard and, though there are other programs that can help with vector graphics and digital illustration, none of them offer the same suite of tools, ease of workflow integration, and general acceptance as Illustrator does. It would be difficult to find another solution for what Illustrator does well.

Illustrator is used within our video department in order to create graphics and charts to implement in our educational videos. It is an absolute necessity and the fact that it is a part of Adobe cloud allows us to seamlessly work between Illustrator, After Effects and Premiere with less exporting and complications. It saves time and a fantastic way to keep our branding streamlined.
  • Easy to use.
  • You can personalize your layout to a workflow that works best for you.
  • Integrates well between all other Adobe software.
  • Illustrator has a tendency to lag if open too long.
  • It took me a while to understand how to export all my layers to use in After Effects.
Adobe Illustrator is great for anything involving graphics and animation! Design and layout are made easy in this software, especially if using other Adobe software. It's perfect to use for any type of creative work- from marketing to video. It doesn't make sense to have if you are in accounting or something completely unrelated to art and design.
  • Less time spent in export and time is money.
  • Ability to create even more beautiful graphics for your brand.
  • Opportunities to do creative work you didn't think you had time for. Or the ability to do.
Once you've used one Adobe software, they are all a bit similar in usage. Illustrator is basically a more advanced Photoshop. It can be a bit overwhelming when first opening the program and understanding the ins and outs. But once you get the hang of it you can really knock out projects quickly and efficiently.
I haven't needed much support for Illustrator, but I have reached out to Adobe support for other programs and usually have a decent experience. It's an outsourced department so the language barrier can sometimes cause a setback. They easily accommodate your needs and even screen share to address whatever problem you have.
Illustrator is essentially an advanced Photoshop. Especially in regards to the layout. If you have a decent understanding of Photoshop you can easily get around Illustrator. The big difference is the number of things you can create inside the program comparatively. Creating graphics is hands down the best things about the software.
