We use Ahrefs Site Explorer for fixing issues on current client websites mainly. It provides a wonderful overview of every aspect of a website, including the SEO aspect. I haven't come by a more in-depth website audit tool and love how we can connect/verify ownership of the website in order to change how quickly the site can be scanned.
  • I love how the Ahrefs Site Explorer has the content breakdown so that you can analyze each pages content quality and word count.
  • How it checks resources such as images, Javascript and CSS are really useful.
  • The way you can create a to-do list of fixes is awesome.
  • no cons
It's great for when you launch a new website and need to check if you missed anything during the launch since it's so in depth.

The SEO department is using Ahrefs mostly to identify positive movement within our link building campaigns. We also use it to diagnose Google penalties. It has been extremely valuable when helping clients recover from these penalties. It provides the key metrics and attributes when need to identify real problems they may be having. The export features are nice as well.
  • The index of links updates very often
  • The export features allow easy data cross analysis with other data sources
  • The price is well worth the return of service and usefulness
  • Sometimes the index does not pick up current live links for a long time.
  • The cap for data exports is pretty low considering the vastness of a link profile.
  • There should be a feature where you can classify link types by your own parameters.
If you want to monitor your backlinks in almost real time, Ahrefs is the tool you need. They update their index faster than any other service I have seen, so if you are actively building link through content marketing other tactics, it will be nice to see what links show up naturally from your efforts. If you are looking for the best solution for cleanse a backlink profile, there are better tools out there specializing in those efforts.
  • Helped remove penalties
  • Proved content marketing strategy
  • Helped improve content marketing offering
  • Majestic SEO,Open Site Explorer
Honestly, we use all three of them. The truth is that not one of them is perfect and we want a complete view of a client backlink profile. We really like ahrefs for the price point and the freshness of their index as mentioned earlier. Their interface is not as user friendly as Open Site Explorer, but we find that the data is a lot better.
Their index is too vast to ignore when looking at a complete backlink profile. We find links in Ahrefs that do not appear in any other link detection tool. For this reason, it's a must for our agency to use for the foreseeable future. Plus, it's very affordable considering the data you get.

Ahrefs Site Explorer is being used primarily by the SEO department to monitor and track backlinks for client and competitor websites. Ahrefs' web crawler provides a large amount of data including new/lost links, referring domains, and anchor text distribution to identify gaps or red flags for a website's inbound links. This large dataset is especially useful for off-site SEO audits, competitor analysis, and backlink cleanup.
  • Large data set of inbound links across a seemingly infinite set of websites and pages.
  • Intuitive interface and dashboard data that can be exported to a spreadsheet.
  • New/Lost link lists are typically inaccurate, making it hard to identify real trends vs. links that have just been discovered by Ahrefs.
  • Window for analysis of New/Lost links is limited, making it hard to discover historical trends within the online interface.
Ahrefs gives a good snapshot of inbound links, and has an incredibly large web index. This makes for quick identification of trends, but inaccuracy must always be considered within such a large dataset. When comparing other backlink tools, it's important to look into their process of discovering and indexing links to ensure that you get the most accurate picture for decision-making and strategy. In comparision to most other tools, Ahrefs link counts usually seem drastically inflated.
  • Ahrefs makes it easy to identify gaps for new-business pitches
  • Ahrefs has increased efficiency with competitor analysis.
  • Majestic SEO,Moz
Each of these tools has advantages over the other. Ahrefs link counts are often considerably higher than Moz or Majestic, which could be indicative of a larger web index or inaccuracy in filtering old links. Ultimately, we use all of these tools to be able to take advantage of the different proprietary analysis modules that they each offer.
Ahrefs recently became more expensive. While they offer a large web index of backlinks, some of the modules of analysis available in similar tools make them a better value in many respects. Ahrefs continues to update their interface, but the accuracy of link counts and new/lost data modules calls into question the validity of the provided information.
  • Backlink volume/rate analysis
  • Anchor text distribution analysis
  • Competitor analysis
  • New/lost link identification
  • in-depth link analysis
Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

We use Ahrefs to help with and monitor backlinks/anchor text on client/competitor sites. Our seo department generally is the heaviest user of the platform. It helps with a better understanding of how we are stacking up against clients and can sometimes help come up with new ideas based on backlinks. We love that is updated by the day, it really helps us create some strong ideas.
  • Backlink analysis
  • Anchor text distribution
  • Competitive analysis
  • Dashboard could be easier to follow
  • Exports can take forever
  • Social reporting would be awesome
None, in my mind it is the best out there for what it can do!
  • Employees are very hands on with it
  • A lot of insight into competiors
  • If links are being built- you can show clients, great ROI for them
  • moz,brightedge
Very easy to use, user friendly and provides great insight.
We use it daily, no need to change a good thing.

My review of Ahrefs

We are currently using Ahrefs as a backlink explorer tool, as well as a method to analyze and conduct research for current and prospective clients. Currently, we're looking at back links -- internally and externally, redirect types, new and lost links, and indexing. The download speed is super fast, and the service has been very reliable.
  • Showing a good depth into the backlink profile
  • Quick load and download time
  • Easy to use and train on
  • Nice competitive comparison
  • Simple reporting
  • Offer larger batch analysis
  • Incorporate more social networks
  • Option to white-label reports
I think any situation where someone is looking to analyze or control the online marketing presence of a site, you're wanting to look at backlinks. Depending on how many clients or websites you're managing this for, you may want to consider pricing. For more websites or more links, you may want to consider AHREFS. But for one site, maybe other tools would be better suited.
  • Ability to show links built by our organization
  • Ability to report on changes over time
  • Anchor text analysis efficiency
  • RavenTools,Majestic SEO,Moz
I think it all depends on how many websites you're managing. All of these backlink tools do one thing better or worse - it all depends on your goal and your needs. Ahrefs is a simple solution that's a great add-on to other tools. If it were integrated into a bigger tool, that would be good too.
I do not make this decision. But if I had to make a recommendation, I would recommend that we continue use of Ahrefs as long as backlink and link profile is a part of our strategy and an added value we provide to our clients. I'd have no problem continuing use.
