Algolia allowed us to set up and configure product and category search very quickly without managing and maintaining additional services such as elastic search. It took the burden of lengthy configuration away and allowed engineering teams' time to be focused much less on interpreting product requirements for search bugs and features to managing or pointing others to a well designed set of options in Algolia.
  • Easy setup and configuration of fast search results across multiple types of object
  • Can be used to power sales pages, category headings, category product listings, help articles and more within the same search results
  • Managing synonyms, blocked words and other product requirements can be done without engineering support
  • Allowing multiple users and having versioning of changes by users and the ability to roll back based on dates/deltas would have been useful
We ended up using Algolia to power our search and many of our listings pages, especially our ranked sale pages. We ranked based on sale data, availability and more.
  • Quick setup due to strong documentation and support
  • No maintenance burdens
  • Simplification of configuration
  • Freed up developer time
  • Empowered product and marketing folk to control site elements directly
  • Delivered more performance dynamic listings and search than previously existed
Algolia got us up and running faster and more easily than if we'd managed elastic search and it's configuration by ourselves. Upfront and ongoing costs and complications/ custom implementations were removed from the equation by choosing Algolia out of the gate.

One developer has the majority of knowledge around Algolia but it is somewhat distributed among a couple of others for redundancy.
  • Site Search for; Product, Category, Help Q&A
  • Dynamically sorting sale pages based on updated sales/click data
  • Populating sortable and searchable lists for internal administrative pages
  • Combining multiple lists for a single set of search results
  • Leveraging search to generate certain sale pages where ranking needed to be complicated and partly user-managed
  • Reviewing searches with no results to identify popular products we need to bring back
Algolia is now an integral part of our infrastructure. It takes away the pain of managing elastic search and the nuances that go with getting that finely tuned.
Every time we reached out to support with a question or potential bug, we received a response within hours and had our issues resolved - we were never left waiting too long and we never had issues that couldn't be solved using some form of suggested workaround.
The support we received as a regular customer with reasonable volume was perfectly adequate.
Yes
Bugs were either fixed with a suggested workaround or raised to the dev team and fixed in the upcoming release as a priority (within 1-2 weeks max)
We were put in contact with the development team a couple of times which is rare but very nice to have when you are a team of developers yourselves. It's great to be able to describe a problem using the same communication style and specific language to help the issue be understood and resolved correctly.
It never went down and was always performant!
100% uptime for as much as we were aware :P
Faster than our APIs soooooooo yeah - we started using it more and more for the insanely fast 30-50ms response times.

Improving search for e-commerce. Fast results from large index, plus suggested and product recommendation. This improves navigation and product discovery for users (shoppers), and shortens time to product pages, and time to cart, to increase conversions. We need a rapid solution that can meet the needs of a large catalogue and users searching across lots of disparate categories

  • Tech support is non existent
  • Customer service doesn’t respond
  • Faulty billing platform
  • Service can be blocked without warning
Tech support and customer service is non existent. When you have an issue you can’t in touch with anyone, and no one responds. What’s worse is that the billing issue we had was caused by their platform. But instead of receiving any notification or warning to resolve the service was blocked and the application terminated. This left us without search on our platform, and no way to unblock application or restore service. Several support tickets were created, which was an easy to resolve if someone had responded, but no response or resolution. I believe this is a “unicorn” with massive funding and they can’t get a basic tech support in place with reasonable response times, e.g. 24 hours.
It’s a shame they built such a great product and zero support or service. This makes it unreliable and not fit for purpose. I have also seen similar reviews at G2 aswell- so this is clearly not an isolated incident and is being experienced by lots of users, who likely end up leaving the product and seeking another solution elsewhere.
  • Search
  • Recommend
  • Affects conversions (uplift when working, huge drop when service is down)
  • AOV (average order value increases when service is on, huge drops of hen service is down)
  • Negative UX when service down
At the time we did a TD on a number of different solutions, and Algolia was selected for its features and functionality. Why we couldn’t account for at the time was the lack of customer service and tech support, or problems that would regularly and repeatedly occur within their billing platform etc.
It’s non existent. No tech support and no customer service… my application was blocked and is currently inactive causing huge business disruption, and I’m still waiting days later for a response to an issue which could be resolved very very quickly if only they would respond. Very poor from a company of that size
Yes we’re on the Premium tier plan- but as far as I can see there is no Premium dedicated support. So no way to access the support needed, or get the response and resolution that you want. I wish I could upgrade to premium support, then maybe I’d get a response
Yes
I reported the bug, which was one that could be resolved quickly but it required their response and actioning something on their side. I waited and waited and no response came, meaning my service was down and the application was blocked for days causing huge business disruption. I wish I knew this before going with their product
No I can’t

It is used across development departments as the API from searching different system entities.
We could have gone with our own Elasticsearch setup. However, this would require maintaining a dedicated cluster over multiple regions. That has operational cost. We would also need expertise on best practices in tuning the different indexes and keeping the service highly available.
We choose to let Algolia take care of out text search needs and only take care of keeping it synced.
  • Very little infrastructure needed. Can be used directly from client or from different services.
  • Very reliable. We had very little down time if at all. Response times are good.
  • Search API is a little confusing (what is a facet?).
  • UI is nice, but it doesn't do a good job in helping you define your queries.
It's less appropriate if you can't afford your data being persisted on a cloud service. Also, if search is a key component of your business I don't believe relying on a third-party service is worth it. Deploying your own Elasticsearch cluster is not that hard of an endeavour and would also save you money.
However, for any other use case Algolia will save you a lot of time and give your business amazing full text search capabilities with minimum friction and time.
  • Fast and reliable search indexes.
  • Highly available service over multiple regions.
Algolia does not require your own setup so we could get going fast. Algolia is known for being fast and highly available. It requires less domain knowledge. It is a lot more expensive though. Another plus is that is it very easy to sync data to it. You can backfill millions of records in less than a minute.
We did have one occurrence where we maxed out our plan and the service didn't respond well. This is probably a very common scenario and it took half a day to get things back to normal with slow response time. Price is also a consideration. If you are restrained in that sense you might want to dedicate the time to having your own setup from the get-go.
