Designer cloud is a game changer for Alteryx since it allows users who are comfortable with cloud delivered services to benefit from a similar user experience to Alteryx desktop products. Since it's functionality is growing rapidly it won't be long before the tooling available is also the same but for the meantime, being able to do ETL, prep and blend and other important functions to wrangle data without the costs of managing the infrastructure is very exciting. This coupled with the other elements of the product suite in the cloud such as Alteryx Auto Insights and ML make for a very strong cloud offering.
  • Cloud based prep, blend, ETL and machine learning based data wrangling
  • Low code no code data extraction, transformation and outputs to multiple sources
  • ability to connect natively to AWS Snowflake and other industry standard lakehouse providers
  • The current functionality is not as extensive as the desktop products but this is being recitifed quickly with monthly updates
  • The interface is slightly different to the desktop products but this only takes a few minutes to work out
For doing ETL and data transformations where your data is already in a cloud environment Alteryx Designer Cloud is ideal. It allows for the continued democratisation of data and analytics to permeate more extensively throughout a business, particularly those that are already in the cloud or have cloud services in place and are comfortable with procurement and consumption of these systems over and above desktop software. The ETL processing for data validation and wrangling uses machine learning to enable highly efficient data manipulation which saves lots of time and this is a distinct advantage over the desktop software. The expansion and integration of other Alteryx cloud services such as ML, Metrics Store and App builder will only strengthen this position.
  • Cloud based
  • automated workflows
  • Flexible and fast data connections to data warehouses/lakes
  • integration with other Alteryx cloud products.
  • Increased productvity by 5x
  • Reduced costs of running and patching desktop and server based software entirely

We use Trifacta to clean and align data sources to a DRUID database. It allows us to streamline our process of data integration using a tool that is not dependent on heavy tools that involve coding. This has simplified our hiring process because we do not need heavy coding requirements for each individual staff member. We can also copy and paste the process created in each data cleaning integration and repurpose our work. It really expediates simple tasks of data cleaning, etc.
  • Gives automatic options for code.
  • Allows for notes on code.
  • Duplicates work and allows for repurposing work.
  • Needs additional definitions for code.
It is really purposeful for large individual-level data sources that need to be sorted and cleaned. It is not useful for datasets that include colors, etc.
  • Automated code options.
  • It makes it easier to hire staff for data cleaning.

We are using Trifacta within our organization for multiple use cases. These include simple reporting, data profiling, issue detection, and data prep for analytics. The main benefit of this tool is that you can get at the target data very quickly compared to any programming language.
  • Data profiling
  • Big data processing
  • Data wrangling
  • Automation
  • Smart algorithms suggest data manipulation steps when you simply select data.
  • Hadoop source data tables are presented in a flat searchable list but I would rather see them in the native hierarchy.
  • Web interface can be flaky. We often need to refresh the page.
Trifacta is well suited for complex, numerous, and large data sets. Of course, it handles smaller or simpler data quite well also. I find it uselful all the time for distilling the data down to the desired output.
  • Trifacta is not cheap. Replacing expensive programmers is a plus, though.
  • The ability to get at desired data quickly can be a differentiator for your organization, as tools like Trifacta are not yet mainstream, but they will be.
Our IT group presented Trifacta to me. They picked it out and among the crowd for me. This was way beyond ETL tools, SQL, or any programming language. It's just much faster and because it's sitting on Hadoop you bypass some of the slowdowns typically faced with RDBMS.
