Pros and Cons

  • To get data from various disparate sources and to have a holistic view of the marketing activities.
  • To provide sales with leads weekly or monthly based on their marketing engagement.
  • To analyze the CRM systems like Pardot & Salesforce to create a list of customers for targeted email campaigns.
  • Though it provides good data blending functionality, the visualization aspect is missing. For visualizing data you need Tableau or Power BI.
  • They have some shortcomings like when reading similar files. The tool figures the datatypes randomly and a integer data type might be read as text, and then the tool is unable to read data. There is a way around this but it's cumbersome.
  • The API connections are limited at this point. They do have a macro which you can create to connect to any API, but it's not very straightforward.

Pros and Cons

  • Clean any data
  • Data wrangling
  • Predictive analytics
  • Spatial Analytics
  • Creating Macros are not easy for less experienced people, need lot of work.
  • Spatial analytics is very good but again it need more focus to understand.
  • Predictive analytics is not used by everyone, it's potential can be unmasked only with data science use cases.
  • Data Visualization capabilities

Pros and Cons

  • Macros are a lifesaver. You can just write a set of logics, create a macro, and use it in any flow and any number of times.
  • Data Connectivity for SQL is super easy, and it's powerful.
  • Scheduling the flows and reporting. I use it to schedule the flows in off business hours so that I can get the data ready for the next day.
  • The Maps feature in the tool can be improved.
  • Alteryx could come up with the feature of pausing the workflow. As of now, there is only an option to stop.

Pros and Cons

  • Data mining: data can be manipulated easily and completely replace excel formulas.
  • Forecasting: It has inbuilt statistical models that can serve basic forecasting very well, moreover one can also manipulate the R coding that can help with complex data.
  • Statistical analysis: this tool can easily replace the Minitab software by providing solutions for statistical analysis.
  • Graphs and charts: Although Alteryx is able to generate graphs and charts, they are not visually pretty and has a big room for improvement.

Pros and Cons

  • Blending multiple data into one data set.
  • Alteryx is great for doing Spatial analysis with data.
  • Alteryx perfectly integrates with other application or data sources.
  • It doesn't have a perfect predictive model for predictive analysis.
  • Alteryx is moving into a prescriptive and cognitive analysis of data. Since we can do a very limited number of operations in this field.

Pros and Cons

  • Excellent support for the tools through training/white papers and online support.
  • Ease of use - high common sense factor makes the program easy to learn and apply.
  • Compatibility with everything but specifically with commonly used key programs like Tableau.
  • Cost is a factor - while support and training are "free" the software price is high.
  • It helps to have some good Excel experience to make instant adoption even easier.
  • The trainers tend to go a bit fast so slow learners may need multiple sessions.

Pros and Cons

  • Seamless Data Input (Ingestion): Alteryx is capable of connecting with many data sources, we have used Tableau in cloud-hosted solutions with additional support of OleDB & ODBC connections.
  • Advanced analytics: We have used statistical analytics tools which makes it easy for a user to look at data and provide simple summary statistics, while also having the ability to build advanced regression models.
  • Macros: Just like other tools (e.g. SAS), Alteryx builds a macro. Be it a batch or iterative, it can save loads of efforts for standard and recursive processes. We've built numerous macros and use at least 10+ in every workflow post design so data is handled the same way in every workflow for consistency and cutting down on copy/pastes.
  • Visualization needs severe improvement if it wants to be up to par from its market competitors like Tableau.
  • The workflow scheduler has been reported as frozen in the earlier version which needs betterment.
  • Lack of documentation for the few functionalities and higher cost is a trade-off as well.

Pros and Cons

  • Designing dashboards is very easy and intuitive in Alteryx. Although some form of analytical aptitude is needed, most of it is very user friendly.
  • Embedding R or Python Code is fairly straightforward in Alteryx. This makes it very sophisticated for data analysis and predictive data modelling.
  • Effective mathematical calculations-- which are difficult to code in SQL-- are very easy to write in Alteryx.
  • Improved Maps/ GeoCoding system for geographical analysis should be there.
  • Running data extracts can be made more efficient. Tableau does it much better.
  • Cross-Database joins should be allowed and the data extraction should be much simpler.

Pros and Cons

  • Alteryx does a great job of allowing more beginner Analysts to automate many of their routine process but also allowing advanced Analysts to ability to leverage deep statistical modelling for predictive analytics.
  • Given the visual workflow nature of Alteyrx, the learning curve is not steep.
  • The Alteryx Gallery allows non-technical consumers to execute complex workflows by leveraging an intuitive web interface.
  • Alteryx allows data scientists to bring their own programming language to Altyerx, such as R or Python.
  • Alteryx has opportunity with version control. Currently today versioning is handled through saving different versions of each workflow.

Pros and Cons

  • Objective analysis
  • Process build
  • Data integration
  • Faster speed of query
  • More complex join capability. Some more experienced users would like to make more complex joins after the data is in process map rather than a complete preparation before including in process map
  • Connection with Power BI, Tableu, or other graphical data tools would make more seamless intelligence

Pros and Cons

  • Makes automating data cleaning a breeze.
  • Data prep becomes a fun activity with Alteryx.
  • Analytics becomes more of a focus, as Alteryx is doing the heavy lifting.
  • Training seems to be lacking or expensive.
  • Offline guides would be helpful instead of logging into the online training.
  • Multi-use licence would be great to jump from laptop to desktop.

Pros and Cons

  • User-friendly interface - the tool structure and general workspace are very easy to pick up on. Short learning curve from "no experience" to "beginner user".
  • Standardization - modules/wizards allow a single tool to generate results for multiple clients, all through the use of a few actions/inputs.
  • Analytics - wide range of statistical analytics tools makes it easy for a user to look at data and provide simple summary statistics, while also having the ability to build advanced regression models.
  • Excel reporting - reports in PDF are fairly straightforward, but trying to output results in Excel can prove to be tricky/ugly.
  • Chart creation - current chart tool is very basic; needs to be a way to customize the look/feel of a chart more, as well as an easier way to incorporate "big" data that can be easily reported on/viewed.

Pros and Cons

  • Data ingestion: Alteryx is capable of connecting with a multitude of data sources from SQL databases to cloud-hosted solutions like Salesforce, Tableau, or Google Analytics. Also supports OleDB & ODBC connections.
  • Dynamic data munging: Alteryx has a great variety of processing tools to clean and prep data including: dedupe, formulas, joins, union, sort... Performing these functions really quickly on even moderately equipped laptops or desktops. It's dynamic in that it can easily handle changes in data by allowing extra columns to flow through.
  • Macros: have a process that you are consistently running in separate workflows? Build a macro, be it a batch or iterative, Alteryx can do it. I've built 40-50 macros and use at least 4+ in every workflow I design so data is handled the same way in every workflow for consistency and cutting down on copy/pastes.
  • I've had issues with the scheduler tool getting frozen or stuck in previous versions. For about the last 2-3 months the latest software version has been much more reliable. Previously I had to restart the Alteryx service on my machine at least once a week, which meant my workflows weren't running while the service had been stuck and data wasn't moving.
  • Some of the connectors, like the Tableau Online connector, should become supported by Alteryx. The online community is fantastic and has created a ton of useful macros and it would be great if Alteryx would adopt, support, and enhance some of the most widely used and useful.

Pros and Cons

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.
  • Sometimes the desktop version of authoring tool crashes! It's been unstable in the previous versions but gets better. Even if it doesn't crash, it used to be slow or not responding.
  • When running several version of database drivers in local machine or server, it is tricky to set up database connections. Often you have to figure out it by googling the problem and solution. There are not many knowledge bases from Alteryx.
  • Alteryx project file creates .bak file automatically. It is useful to prevent for the purpose of back up, sometimes it's not necessary. But it is not changeable for some reason. By default, it always creates backups.

About Alteryx Platform

The Alteryx Platform is a business intelligence and predictive analytics solution. The vendor's value proposition is that their solution provides analysts with the unique ability to easily prep, blend, and analyze all of their data using a repeatable workflow, then deploy and share analytics at scale for deeper insights in hours, not weeks. According to the vendor, analysts love the Alteryx Analytics platform because they can connect to and cleanse data from data warehouses, cloud applications, spreadsheets, and other sources; easily join this data together, then perform analytics – predictive, statistical, and spatial – using the same intuitive user interface, without writing any code. Additionally, the vendor says thousands of companies and data analysts worldwide rely on Alteryx daily.
