  • Cost effective backup storage for pennies per GB. We have been able to maintain customer backups as part of our base service fees. The costs are usually so low, we can offer an affordable backup to our customers without added cost to them making us more competitive.
  • One small slip of the delete command by one of system administrators wiped out our entire web directory for one of our biggest clients. We had it restored from backup in minutes. Our client didn't even notice that there service had gone down until we sent an email notifying them of our slip up.
  • This was a lesson learned early on in our business, but Amazon S3 made it a small hiccup not a catastrophic event that cost us money.

  • Vast amounts of data storage has let us grow without limitation.
  • We do need to babysit the costs since it is one of our most expensive products due to sheer scale.
  • S3 has let us move off of really expensive Databases which was a huge win.

  • The time savings of using S3's advanced features versus implementing our own web hosting or asset services is the biggest ROI-- it's a fast-to-use platform that you'll never need to migrate away from because it's so stable and effective.
  • The costs of maintaining local asset hosting (once you factor in maintenance and labor costs) consistently exceeds (and underperforms) what S3 can provide.
  • S3 provides an easy introduction to the AWS ecosystem for companies who are new to its technology. Learning an applying S3 can be done without advanced training or experience, while simultaneously it'll teach you many of the conventions used throughout AWS.

  • Allows us to store large amounts of raw traffic from data providers to allow us to view data our systems received at particular times, in order to reconstruct inputs in case of errors
  • Is capable of storing very large amounts of data cheaply without material impact to our business

  • No more need to maintain in-house storage such as servers or bulky external harddrives (that can easily be lost or damaged)
  • Easy to collaborate and share files with other team members
  • S3 Static Website hosting is great for short term web pages or sharing sites still in Development

  • The amount of time we've saved deploying our websites and files to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) has been tremendous. The other option would have been to host them ourselves in a dedicated server.
  • We've saved a requisite amount of money by hosting our static websites in an Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket instead of VPS.

  • S3 can be a really great service for a company if used properly. We have had troubles related to billing because we had not spent some time understanding the pricing. Understand costs that will be incurred in setting up your system in a way that inter-regional data transfer will happen, or a lot of old versions of objects are stored.
  • S3 basically takes away all the maintenance headache of storing your data in cloud. It is durable, scalable and reliable. So, it saves a lot of resources that would be otherwise wasted accomplishing all that. You do not have to worry about servers and the capacity you need to provision for them. S3 takes care of all that for you.
  • S3 integrates seamlessly with many other services. My personal favorite is where we use a trigger of S3 upload to invoke a lambda function to process the contents and raise an alarm if there is a validation error. This simple set up will be relatively difficult to implement if you were to use simple servers to store your data.

  • S3 has helped us usefully version and archive static content, and once we got that up and running the ongoing maintenance costs and effort have been quite low.
  • S3's interactions with CloudFront, on the other hand, are often counter-intuitive and resulted in us abandoning a project to make use of CloudFront partway through.
