We use CloudStack to deliver IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) to a university community. Resources are applied on research, management and education across the whole University. Before that, there were a lot of local data centers spread across the university's several campuses. Using cloud computing with CloudStack, the operational and management costs were significantly decreasead.
  • Low-cost solution
  • Open-source
  • Engaged community
  • Solid documentation
  • Is a very reliable tool for orchestration with good usability
  • Maintenance tools
  • Less command line interventions
  • Server logs not so friendly
  • Upgrades are not so straightforward
  • The graphical interface performance in big environments can get a little bit slow
CloudStack is well suited if you want to keep the costs low and still need a reliable and robust tool to cloud virtualization orchestration. The end user interface is friendly so users can find and use functionalities quickly. Also, the newer version allows you to integrate CloudStack with external authentication using SAML for single sign-on. It can be less appropriate for an administrator that does not want to do a lot of interventions using a command line or that does not use the Linux operating system.
  • Low-cost solution (free and open-source)
  • More than 2000 users using it simultaneously
  • Stable and reliable
  • Up and running since 2012
CloudStack stacks up by keeping it simple for end users through its UI. Admins may take some time to get familiar with everything and to learn how to manage it efficiently. The main advantages of CloudStack are that is free, open-source (written in Java) and has an engaged community for support and troubleshooting. Finally, it can be less appropriate in scenarios where admins are not familiar with Linux operating systems and command line interventions.

Apache CloudStack offers a solid documentation and a large community for users and developers that make troubleshooting less difficult. Is a very reliable tool for orchestration with good and simple usability.

You can deploy new virtual machines with a few clicks.

Due to big and engaged community, updates are available frequently in order to solve bugs and improve features.

Is an open-source software that is very important to build a low cost solution.

The orchestration architecture is simple. With only one server it is possible to have a cloud orchestrator, provisioning network, compute and disk. Updates are often published. User authentication can be based in SAML 2.0. This product is open source and is possible to create features as your needs. Good features can be submitted to the community to be released in next versions. Almost all functions to maintenance are available in API.

CloudStack is a simple monolithic agnostic orchestration tool that you need a couple hours to study, design and implement to have huge result, an entire IaaS experience. Because it's simple the troubleshooting is very easy and the providers can delivery a great SLA to their clients

Apache CloudStack an open source solution that allows us keep in touch with the worldwide community of contributors whose maintain its source code and working actively of creation of new functionalities, fixing bugs and helping other users solve their problems. The software also permits a quick scalability of hardware. For end users, the interface provides the experience of total control of your resources as if they had mini data-center

  • New functionalities
  • Fixing bugs
  • Private and public clouds
  • Sometimes you can find undocumented bugs
  • It fails in the area where instead of making stuff that works bug free it introduces new ones with every minor or major release
  • More Rigid

Whether our clients are VPS hosting providers or operate private cloud infrastructure for their internal enterprise requirements, CloudStack provides solutions in an easy to implement and operate way that is simple to provide training for.

The learning curve for our customesr adopting CloudStack for the management of their cloud infrastructure is shallow, enabling our clients to come up to speed quickly without having to outsource their administrative functions any longer than necessary

  • Delivering Infrastructure as a Service to University community. Resources are applied on research, management and education.
  • Before that, there were a lot of local data centers spread trough the University (considering all campus). Using cloud computing with CloudStack, the operational cost was significantly decreasead
  • Our need was in a low-cost product, not complex, with low maintenance, resilient, able to orchestrate a large pool of IT equipment
The University, my first large implementation, had a big issue with 149 small data centers spread on São Paulo State, this data centers costs to university were very high, the consolidation idea in two data centers were awesome, but were worried with the management, so we adopted ACS to management of all 576 physical hosts. Now a days the university is delivering IaaS for all staff, students, teachers and researchers, they are using these resources to delivery services to their clients and have a great results in research area

We have to provide a private cloud infrastructure in our university in order to supply the demand for virtual resources for our researchers. Instead of each one of them deploying to a small datacenter in their labs, we can centralize all hardware in datacenters with redundancy, reliability and all services of an SLA. As the orchestrator layer, Apache CloudStack facilitates the management of compute, storage and network resources.
  • The software permits a quick scalability of hardware.
  • For end users, the interface provides the experience of total control of their resources as if they had a mini data center.
  • Allow us to set resource limits and quotas for user accounts.
  • VPN site-to-site allows interconnection between the cloud environment and the client local data center.
  • VPC feature allow interconnection between two or more user accounts without the need to internet routing.
  • Sometimes you can find undocumented bugs that can compromise the entire infrastructure.
  • [If] you don't have an official support channel, you have try to find out the source of the problem by yourself.
  • Volume size limitation. Other players allow you to create volumes up to 64TB while ACS allows only 2TB volumes
Apache Cloudstack provides a complete solution for different end users' skills. It works fine with the most known hypervisors and also has a great cost benefit for small and medium companies. You are able to manage a complete cloud environment with a minimal support team. Unfortunately, Apache Cloudstack is not the first choice as a cloud orchestrator, so it can be difficult to find solutions for other companies to integrate their products to a cloudstack solution.
  • Minimal impact at migration from the earlier solution used (Citrix CloudPortal), once both solutions have a common kernel.
  • Reduction to 0 with payment of software license.
Apache CloudStack is the perfect solution for small and medium companies or for those who are starting in the world of cloud computing. From my point of view, there is an advantage against VMware solutions with regard to software license price and open stack solution in regards to software complexity.
