Hive is a great tool for running queries on a large number of tabulated data. It is easy to use. Our team uses it mostly for running complex Join queries. But again it's the speed that is the differentiating factor. It turns out that MapReduce is not that fast when compared to other alternatives.

HQL is a friendly SQL-based query language that provides familiarity to engineers and business analysts. Interfaces like Hue provide clean and modern tooling to ease the experience.

Apache Hive makes use of HiveQL as mentioned earlier. Most of the people working with data are comfortable using Structured Query Language syntax. Hence I would give a rating of 10 on 10 for the Hive's usability. May be few functionalities can be added like an update or a post execute feature - making it much more robust.

Very handy and easy to understand, but can prove difficult when performing huge queries (advanced level). Overall, I don't think competitors can do better in terms of usability. The learning curve is really good!

Thanks to its high usability Apache Hive enables users to craft extensive queries really efficiently and at the same time to how to hold response times very low. HiveQL simplicity makes it super easy to manage large datasets, what was almost an impossible task before introduction of Apache Hive data warehousing platform in our company.

Hive is a very good big data analysis and ad-hoc query platform, which supports scaling also. The BI processes can be easily integrated with Hadoop via the Hive. It can deal with a much larger data set that traditional RDBMS can not. It is a "must-have" component of the big data domain.

It uses standard SQL, which most architects and developers are quite familiar with writing. The user interface and general intuitiveness of navigation are very dated and will require some searching for documentation before being able to find what certain functions are able to do. Works well but is still quite slow compared to similar products such as Impala.

I rate it highly because it is easy to use and scalable. The SQL syntax enables the user to quickly jump in. It also works really well for datasets that have a large disk size. Also, the documentation is good enough for new users.
