What is Arcserve Backup?

Arcserve Backup is a comprehensive storage management solution for distributed and multiplatform environments that can backup and restore data from every machine on your network, including those running Windows, UNIX, and Linux.

Formerly of CA Technologies before Arcserve's divestiture (July 2014), Arcserve Backup utilizes magnetic tape storage backup as part of its storage management offering.

It offers control and visibility from one management console, whether supporting small-scale or large-scale enterprise environments across different platforms and organizations.

Jobs are submitted on a primary server and can be run either locally on the primary server itself, or remotely on any of the associated member servers. Users can perform and monitor job operations such as backup, restore, merge, scan, migrate, copy, compare, and so on for all servers from the primary server.

In addition, a central catalog file is created with descriptive information about each session and allows users to select the specific files and directories to be restored without having to query the database itself. When data needs to be restored, the program can quickly browse the content of each session in the catalog file from a single central location to locate the information.

With central reporting, users can launch and create scheduled reports for all servers in a domain from the primary server. Schedule, preview, print or email reports for all domain servers from the primary server.

We use Arcserve Backup UDP for our primary image based backup and data protection solution. We use Arcserve Cloud Direct as our secondary offsite cloud backup solution.
  • Arcserve Backup has many offerings to fit many business sizes and needs.
  • It offers excellent features like dedupe, high availability, DR, and BMR.
  • Arcserve Backup sales and technical support is good to work with.
  • Very nice reseller program and benefits.
  • Arcserve Backup can be costly.
  • To utilize Arcserve Backup and all its features may require a layout of dedicated equipment or additional infrastructure.
  • They don't always explain that for Arcserve Backup to work well, and it requires specific system requirements and extensive internet bandwidth.
For small, medium or large size businesses, Arcserve Backup offers lots of rich features for the price and depending on configuration can provide everything from basic backups to full-scale data management, protection, and fast recovery. BMR features allow for quicker recovery of windows servers and workstations. Having cloud-based storage options allows for Arcserve Backup to cover local, offsite and DR backup scenarios.
  • Arcserve Backup has had a positive impact on ROI, as a reseller we are able to build in a healthy profit margin by reselling the product and services.
  • Some of our company managed services are based upon clients running Arcserve Backup.
  • Data recovery and system recovery times have reduced over product upgrades and enhancements, causing much less downtime.
Both have similar feature sets. Unitrends seems to have a set number of configuration options for each environment and lays those templates down, whereas Arcserve Backup is more hands off with the initial backup configuration and do not have a basic SQL Template, for example. So Unitrends appears to be easier to get up and running out of the box.
Arcserve Backup support is usually very good. Their chat is usually able to fix most general issues, but will escalate more in depth issues to technical engineers that call you back. Their product knowledge is really good and usually resolve issues promptly.

All four techs in our support department use Arcserve Backup internally as well as support it for many of our clients.

Previous knowledge of backups, data protection, and recovery solutions is not required but recommended for using and supporting Arcserve Backup. Advanced technicians, technical engineers, or other type of level 2 or higher technical support person would be the ideal person to manage and support Arcserve Backup.
  • Arcserve Backup is used for our daily backups and data protection.
  • Arcserve Backup is used for all servers and critical WS protection\BMR.
  • We use and resell the Cloud Direct version of Arcserve Backup for offsite and cloud storage backup options.
  • We have been able to recover WSs with failed hard drives using the BMR feature and recovered WS back to a date in time.
  • Utilizing both Arcserve UDP and Cloud Direct for a full DR solution.
  • Using free workstation edition for one-off WSs.
  • We could have images of server OS builds that could be stamped down using Arcserve Backup.
  • Utilizing Cloud Direct more for remote locations and users.
We have used Arcserve Backup for over 20 years and they have been a solid product that does backups well. Product offers rich features and a wide array of offerings to accommodate most business sizes and budgets. Arcserve Backup partner and support groups have been very good and helpful to work with.

Arcserve UDP is deployed on all of our data centers and branch offices; we use it for central and remote sites backup, and for replication and disaster recovery. Additionally, we use the UDP for automatic DR testing and protection of all of our VMs, physical machines, applications, and databases.
  • Backup of Virtual and Physical Machines
  • Replication
  • Instant Virtual Machines
  • Copy to Tape
  • Automatic testing of Disaster Recovery environments
  • Virtual standby automatic restore of VM's and Physical machines
  • Backup using hardware snapshots
  • Backup of Exchange 365
  • File System Archive is limited without stubbing
  • Virtual Standby is limited to Windows only
Arcserve UDP is fully suited for small to large size environments that need complete data protection solutions with the ability to run the fastest backups, replications, instant VM and DR.
  • Using arcserve UDP we managed to reuse the storage used for the previous solution and extend the backup retention to 3 months from two weeks!
  • The cost of using a single solution for backup, DR and replication is much lower than using backup software, VMware SRM and storage replications.
  • BMR capabilities and v2v allows us to use VMware on the production mixture of VMware and hyper-v on the DR to reduce the costs.
We have selected ARCserve v.s the competition for several reasons - the Arcserve UDP data reduction was by far better than the competition, Additionally we found the solution easy to use compared to other alternatives, with the greatest replication and advanced features such as immediate access to backed up data without restore, SLA meeting and more.

Arcserve UDP is fairly simple to use and manage, every system admin can manage the solution - it is very easy to use and manage, and there is a lot of How-Tos available on YouTube.
  • Backup and replications of Physical and Virtual Machines
  • Disaster Recovery automation
  • Easy recovery of applications, data and servers even without the need to restore the data
  • Backup of cloud applications such as Office 365
  • We use ARCserve UDP to create secondary copies of our machines for testing.
  • We use it to run virtual to virtual replication from VMware to Hyper-V on a DR site.
  • We use it to build and test a DR site.
  • We are currently looking at arcserve archive manager for Exchange Archive
  • Incremental forever backup of NAS shares to replace the NDMP
Arcserve UDP provides our organization lots of benefits and it is much more than a simple backup and restore solution. We use it for cross platform DR, storage agnostic replications, DR solution instead of VMware SRM and more.
