What is Arcserve Backup?
Arcserve Backup is a comprehensive storage management solution for distributed and multiplatform environments that can backup and restore data from every machine on your network, including those running Windows, UNIX, and Linux.
Formerly of CA Technologies before Arcserve's divestiture (July 2014), Arcserve Backup utilizes magnetic tape storage backup as part of its storage management offering.
It offers control and visibility from one management console, whether supporting small-scale or large-scale enterprise environments across different platforms and organizations.
Jobs are submitted on a primary server and can be run either locally on the primary server itself, or remotely on any of the associated member servers. Users can perform and monitor job operations such as backup, restore, merge, scan, migrate, copy, compare, and so on for all servers from the primary server.
In addition, a central catalog file is created with descriptive information about each session and allows users to select the specific files and directories to be restored without having to query the database itself. When data needs to be restored, the program can quickly browse the content of each session in the catalog file from a single central location to locate the information.
With central reporting, users can launch and create scheduled reports for all servers in a domain from the primary server. Schedule, preview, print or email reports for all domain servers from the primary server.

Arcserve Backup UDP Review
We use Arcserve Backup UDP for our primary image based backup and data protection solution. We use Arcserve Cloud Direct as our secondary offsite cloud backup solution.
- Arcserve Backup has many offerings to fit many business sizes and needs.
- It offers excellent features like dedupe, high availability, DR, and BMR.
- Arcserve Backup sales and technical support is good to work with.
- Very nice reseller program and benefits.
- Arcserve Backup can be costly.
- To utilize Arcserve Backup and all its features may require a layout of dedicated equipment or additional infrastructure.
- They don't always explain that for Arcserve Backup to work well, and it requires specific system requirements and extensive internet bandwidth.
- Arcserve Backup has had a positive impact on ROI, as a reseller we are able to build in a healthy profit margin by reselling the product and services.
- Some of our company managed services are based upon clients running Arcserve Backup.
- Data recovery and system recovery times have reduced over product upgrades and enhancements, causing much less downtime.
Both have similar feature sets. Unitrends seems to have a set number of configuration options for each environment and lays those templates down, whereas Arcserve Backup is more hands off with the initial backup configuration and do not have a basic SQL Template, for example. So Unitrends appears to be easier to get up and running out of the box.

All four techs in our support department use Arcserve Backup internally as well as support it for many of our clients.

Previous knowledge of backups, data protection, and recovery solutions is not required but recommended for using and supporting Arcserve Backup. Advanced technicians, technical engineers, or other type of level 2 or higher technical support person would be the ideal person to manage and support Arcserve Backup.
- Arcserve Backup is used for our daily backups and data protection.
- Arcserve Backup is used for all servers and critical WS protection\BMR.
- We use and resell the Cloud Direct version of Arcserve Backup for offsite and cloud storage backup options.
- We have been able to recover WSs with failed hard drives using the BMR feature and recovered WS back to a date in time.
- Utilizing both Arcserve UDP and Cloud Direct for a full DR solution.
- Using free workstation edition for one-off WSs.
- We could have images of server OS builds that could be stamped down using Arcserve Backup.

We were using an antique version of Symantec Backup Exec at the time and realized with our global footprint growing, we needed a superior solution that would not only provide better backup functionality but also the scope to replicate our live environment. Arcserve Backup and Replication is now used by our IT department to maintain daily backups, and also maintain replication of our physical servers to our DR site.
- Cost - A very affordable solution.
- Support and Sales - Arcserve has been top notch to us with the sales process and support.
- Replication - One of the core reasons we selected the product. We find the replication side of the software fantastic.
- Backup - An excellent backup product that provides just great functionality and restore-ability at a granular level.
- Has a steep learning curve to the product, if not experienced in backup solutions.
- Windows backup and restore functionality is excellent, however, we have found Linux somewhat lacking.
- We were able to roll back up and replication into one product, which reduced the costs without having to go with multiple vendors.
- As a result of Arcserve UDP, we were able to implement a full DR scenario test, which until that point hadn't been successful.
To be succinct, we have used Veeam B&R for a number of years, against our VM environment, and we have yet to find anything that tops it. However, if you have physical machines in your environment still, then Arcserve is a great option, especially for the replication aspect.
Backup Exec has fallen behind the pack since we used it a number of years ago and changes to the platform have severely weakened the product. Arcserve sits above Backup Exec.
Druva we have just started using, mainly for our laptops, but they do have a cloud-based backup solution that we looked at.

Arcserve is a one of the best backup solution.
We use Aarcserve to backup more than 10 servers with a customized D2D2T three weeks scheduled job. Our single tape drive was so small, but Arcserve has enough options to customize it to fit our needs.
- Easy to use.
- Simple configuration.
- Easy to customize using script.
- Support line just send a link so I have to research by my own.
- Requires you to buy a license for every agent add on.
- VMWare compatibility.
- Data recovery is very nice.
- Licensing goes high if you add-on the other agents.
- Overall ROI is fair.
- Acronis Backup & Recovery and Veeam Backup & Replication
It is easy to deploy and manage. Solid data recovery and good notification option. We need to backup to tape to retain 7 years thus D2D2T is a good option to have.
