We use AWS Certificate Manager across the whole organization to create and manage all the certificates needed to secure connections to other AWS services such as ALB, API Gateway, and CloudFront. The main business problem it solves is the high integration and easy of use within AWS, even to import external keys and certificates and manage them from there.

Pros and Cons

Ease of use
Great integration with other AWS services
Public certificates are free

It would be great if it integrated with other domain name services from domain validation
EC2 and other compute services integration with custom domain

Likelihood to Recommend

I would always recommend AWS Certificate Manager for anyone using AWS cloud services. The perfect scenario would be with your domain managed by AWS Route 53 as you can obtain auto renewal of certificates with really good security for all your public facing application that uses CloudFront, ALB or API Gateway.

Return on Investment

It reduced the cost of certificates renewal
It reduced the time to obtain and manage a certificate for other AWS Services

Alternatives Considered

Sectigo SSL Certificates (formerly Comodo CA) and RapidSSL

Easy to implement within a few clicks, or even from command line, the alternatives doesn't integrate that easy with AWS Application Load Balancers or AWS CloudFront

We are using it at the department level, and mainly we use it to manage SSL certificates for our websites. We found it very useful, especially when we need to renew certificates, because the functionality is really straightforward. The interface is clear and not excessively complex, so we didn't find any problems using it.

Pros and Cons

Sometimes ACM certificates don't work with ELB.
No automatic alert on certificate expiration.

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Certificate Manager is far better than the old IAM certificate manager. It's simple to use, effective and it actually does what it says it will do. Of course, it could be better, but it's perfect for the job as is right now. The private CA is a nice addition, that in some scenarios would be useful.

Simplifies certificate management inside AWS stack.
It works, so one less thing to worry about.

Alternatives Considered

AWS Certificate Manager and IAM are the only options inside the AWS stack to manage and serve certificates at the infrastructure level, like Elastic Load Balancer for example. Of course, you can install certificates at the instance level. For example, you can install a certificate on an EC2 instance, or even, you can use Let's Encrypt for that task too, but those methods are not managed as AWS Certificate Manager does.

Support Rating

As we stated, it's a simple service, with a very clear interface and it simply works. On our daily work, we don't have any problem using AWS Cerfiticate Manager. We don't give it a 10, because it would be better if it adds automatic notifications on certificate expiration or more features in the future.

Usability

AWS historically has had very confusing interfaces. But in recent times they have improved them. AWS Certificate Manager is a clear sample of this. The interface is clear and straightforward, with no useless or cryptic options. Really I can't think of a way the interface could be better with the actual options available.

We use AWS Certificate Manager in our team to set up secure https website to our product pages. Using Certificate Manager we get the SSL certificates and manage them in a better and simpler manner. We have not tried any other approach to get an SSL certificate.

Pros and Cons

AWS has everything that we need to set up an enterprise application and website.
The domain name validation has two types, email based and DNS approach.
The certificate can be used in AWS ELB and archive the secure HTTPS website.
Setup is really simple, hardly involves 3-4 steps.

Domain name validation is time consuming, and requires manual effort.
Domain name validation could be avoided if the domain provider is AWS, they can validate it internally.

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Certificate Manager works with any domain, even non-AWS provided domains. It is an easy and fast way of setting up your secure application website. If you follow the steps properly, like the validation steps wherein you have to add a rout53 entry manually in order to get your domain validated, it will not take much time to get your certificate.
