- Recommendations
Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:
-
Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.
-
Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.
-
Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.
Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

Reviews
(1-25 of 26)- Recognizable brand allows for immediate software acceptance
- Pretty solid APIs to pull in data from other platforms
- Lightweight software that can be accessed from anywhere
- Honestly, I struggle with the User Interface -- it's not intuitive
- I wish there was more extensive drag-and-drop functionality
- I struggle to figure out the stage of a project at certain points
A project management tool that streamlines our process
- Communication. Since it sends you emails as well as gives you a notification in the top bar when you're needed, it's easy to stay on track with comments and feedback.
- File sharing. It supports a lot of different file types, so when referencing a file you can see it right on basecamp without having to download it on your computer first.
- Organization. With large projects it can get overwhelming with lots of comments, comps, and feedback. But with some planning and the use of the Project Activity timeline, it's easy to stay on track.
- High Learning Curve. It's true that it can be easy to use, but to use well and effectively takes some time to learn. It's recommended to have an agreed-upon system in your team of what tools to use and when.
- Notification Overload. If people aren't careful they could send a notification to everyone when only a couple people were meant to be prompted. And since emails are sent by default, you could have your mailbox overloaded with unnecessary updates. This is where it takes a bit of training in your team to have an agreed-upon system.
- Lack of organization with Archived Projects. I will often need to reference an archived project to make a new one, but there is only a list of archived projects in alphabetical order, with no way to organize by archive date, or even search.
Solution for projects and team communication.
- The interface has been very useful since it is intuitive and easy to configure since this platform is based on simplicity.
- No professional recruitment is needed to be able to operate within the platform.
- It is very simple to be able to create and assign tasks to users, in addition to being very simple to be able to follow up on it.
- The ability to manage users is incredible and you can also include clients in projects that are carried out.
- It is not very customizable in terms of aesthetics, hopefully, it could be adapted to the characteristics of the company.
- Sometimes it is a little difficult to keep the thread of the conversation since everything is together and you cannot make comment sections if you have to ask a separate question.
- I think Basecamp is very basic for great projects as it lacks many functions and tools.
I love Basecamp
- Message board where people can share news or ideas.
- Creates a dashboard suited for your needs.
- Notifications may get a bit excessive if you don't set them right.
- I'm not sure if there's an ability to hold video meetings, that would be really good.
Communicate easily using Basecamp
- Easy to add new users and access user information.
- Easy to integrate with email.
- Data is organized well in Basecamp, by new discussions, calendar, projects etc.
- Base camp is good for communicating with other users but not apt for project management.
- It lacks advanced features in project management like milestones, and schedule charts.
- Many reports or files can be stored within the system and accessed easily. But it is difficult to filter files by document type.
If a question or response is unsuitable for the group, it can be dismissed.
Many consider Basecamp to be a project management tool. In my opinion, it should not be used for project management.
Cost effective collaboration tool for large teams
- It is a great tool for large teams. There is no limit on the number of people one can add.
- It comes with a good user interface. For people who were used to old tools, this is a god send.
- It is a cloud application and does not need a big team to maintain it.
- For a person working on multiple projects, it is difficult to flip between different portals.
- Reports can be run out of basecamp. They are very basic, there is scope for improvement there.
- There is no way to track time or record time in basecamp as of now.
Basecamp is a great value for the price!
- Easy to use.
- Works well on iPhone.
- Good value.
- It would be nice to customize notifications to not just be all or none and to select preferences by the project.
A must have for basic collaboration and project management.
- Intuitive and easy to pick up and start using.
- Great system of reminders and notifications to keep everyone up to date.
- The ability to assign to do's and view other's to-do lists is super invaluable to me as a manager.
- Sometimes navigating to areas I frequent is a bit clunky.
- I wish I could at least see projects I'm not invited to, though ideally, I'd love to have a setting to just automatically give me access to everything. As a manager, it's always tedious having to request access to campaigns all the time.
Honestly, in all the instances I've used Basecamp it's worked exceptionally well. I'm sure there are instances where Basecamp is not ideal but in the Advertising world, I've always thought it was a great fit for our needs.
Basecamp - An economical application
- Its messaging board is amazing. It keeps track of the incoming and outgoing messages in a useful queue manner.
- It is an effective tool.
- It offers the ability to make to-do lists which decreases my workload.
- Sometimes there are certain connectivity issues that slow down the working process.
- Although I like everything in it but occasionally when I have to export my work to excel format as they have no feature for that so I feel a bit annoyed and confusing.
- Apart from this, I like each and everything about this product.
Basecamp allows us to effectively manage all our projects
- It is easy to implement and it is simple to assign tasks because the interface is excellent.
- It is excellent for creating a work calendar with specific tasks and dividing them according to areas and processes.
- The chat room is effective, to publish information about the organization.
- It is very useful that all conversations, requirements and shared files are stored on the platform.
- It facilitates the monitoring of the work of each professional, something very significant for the internal management of the projects.
- It is a very excellent program to plan projects in an organization, although Their reports regarding time issues are somewhat basic or elementary.
- It's great for collaboration. When we acquire a new property, we need to consolidate all of its digital assets into one space. Multiple departments need to be able to access these assets. We have teams in 12 states and various timezones. Basecamp allows us to work together even though we're hundreds of miles apart.
- We recently updated our website, turning it into a huge corporate site with several microsites. When building this out, Basecamp was an essential tool working with external agencies. They would upload new wireframes and we could make comments and suggestions.
- It's a great project management tool. When you're working with internal and external stakeholders on multiple projects, Basecamp allows all of us to stay on target and work together.
- Bulk download of files.
- Upload files larger than 10GB.
- Easier UX. The layout can be confusing, especially to those who are new to the platform.
Basecamp Review
- Organization of project material and communication across multiple teams within the business.
- Collaboration, file management, timekeeping.
All projects in one place!
- Keeps things organized and easy to find at any time.
- User-friendly. Easy to upload new information and find information.
- The amount of people that can take advantage of Basecamp at one time is awesome.
- Sometimes when using Google Chrome it does not work so you have to disable some extensions. I wish it could work all the time in any browser without having to do anything.
- It would be nice if Basecamp could change languages also.
- Could probably be a little cheaper.
Basecamp review
- Handle multiple tasks at a single place.
- Communicating with multiple users in one place.
- Not a great UI. The mobile application is not user-friendly.
Handling multiple tasks at a single platform, event management, and meetings.
Organising business is understandable.
Performs work fast. Can chat with individuals and groups in real time.
Notification is sent to the concerned person. Searching filters and activity feeds are also available.
Intuitive and Fun to Use!
- Managing reports for various users so I can quickly see what is on my plate and the plates of others.
- Easy to use, intuitive interface. People with all technological skill levels will be able to use the program.
- Monitor activity several ways - by person, by date, or by project segment.
- Better integration with Google Docs and e-mail (could show a display of the doc instead of the icon, auto-assign an e-mail to a project, etc).
- A feature that would allow you to resurrect a project and tasks, that would automatically clear out the history so you could start fresh without having to re-enter all the tasks.
- It would be great to be able to toggle between seeing completed tasks and uncompleted tasks, both all at once, or just one at a time. Being able to see only the uncompleted tasks on a project would be helpful to give a better overview of what still needs to be done.
Basecamp Meets Higher Ed at UCF
We use Basecamp on projects and ongoing work at the Center for Distributed Learning for communication, collaboration, and to break down tasks into component To Do items. We find that the To Do lists provide a simple "eyeball" method for judging the completeness of tasks.
Our organization consists of various functional teams that are not required to Basecamp. Its use is completely optional but judging by the number of projects currently using it (43), our teams find it a valuable tool.
Some of the projects we are involved in tend to be long-term, slow progress efforts. It would be quite difficult to stay in touch with them without having a record of the goals, desired outcomes, and activity toward those goals. Basecamp solves this problem for us.
- For us the strength of Basecamp is the To Do list. To Do lists help us in three ways: 1) They help us document how work breaks down into component subtasks; 2) They provide a simple means of tracking work (eyeball method); 3) After the work is complete, the To Do list along with all the comments and notes attached to it provides a means to help predict the level of effort for similar tasks that may need to be done in the future.
- I personally use To Do lists frequently when reviewing media for online courses like software demonstrations, videos, stills, and any other content that might be included in the course. Each error, be it a typo, flaw, or design issue is documented a single line item. The To Do item is the assigned to a team member to be addressed. Basecamp notifies them via email. These completed lists provide us with a kind of measure of the initial quality of our alpha-level work.
- I like to refer to Basecamp as "Project Management Lite". Basecamp plays that role well and needs little improvement if used as a project accessory and not as a formal management tool. If I were to wish for one thing it would be that there be some sort of native reporting tool that would help in understanding the level of effort for tasks. I have investigated a few of the third party tools powered by the Basecamp API but have not been satisfied with any so far.
- For our needs here at the University of Central Florida it would be nice to have expanded options for managing user roles that include a wider range of "Super Powers" as Basecamp calls them.
- If you have certain projects that contain sensitive data or other information that must remain totally under your own control then you should probably avoid Basecamp since it is hosted entirely on their facilities.
Best tool for managing Client - Agencies relationship
- Connecting all people involved
- Great project management
- Accessible from all devices
- Voting feature
- Instant messaging
- Very simple to upload notes and documents.
- The whole interface is very easy to pick up.
- Managing multiple projects at one time was easy with dashboard view.
- The calendar could be more robust. I'd like to be able to see what a specific user is doing across multiple projects.
I wouldn't use it for managing larger projects that have many small pieces as the documents may get lost in a flood. It's also too simple to manage technical projects.
- Basecamp is relatively easy to use. Some of our users are not especially comfortable or adept with technology, so having a relatively simple tool was important for us. Project Management tools are tricky, they are only useful if everyone gets on board. Basecamp's ease of use helps everyone get on board.
- Since Basecamp is pretty widely used, there are a fair amount of online resources and training available. As IT people, we didn't want to implement a system we would have to train everyone on and support constantly. Our Basecamp users can get a decent overview and have their questions answered really easily by searching the web.
- It's quick and cost-effective. You can set up an account and start using it within a few minutes. Since it's priced according to how many "projects" you set up and not how many users you have, it's really cheap to use. We never have more than 10 projects going at once, so that means we pay $20/month *total* for unlimited users. We're a non-profit and didn't really have the resources to devote to more sophisticated (expensive) Project Management tools, so this was a big deal for us.
- My biggest overall complaint with Basecamp is that, although the interface is pretty simple, it's also pretty clunky. The point of Basecamp is to keep teams organized and working fluidly, but sometimes the rigid simplicity of Basecamp is as frustrating as it is useful. The project pages can start to look cluttered if a lot of people are involved in a project and they're creating a lot of discussions and posting a lot of files. If you have a lot of people to invite at once (like us, 50+), the interface for inviting them to Basecamp and organizing them into teams and groups is tedious. If you don't keep up with this tedious task as new users are added, then you risk having them lose out on communications. Some level of Active Directory integration or even just a simple email list import function would be a welcome addition.
If you have a larger team like we do, it can still be useful, but it becomes a bit harder to get everyone to adhere to it consistently. While this is true of just about any Project Management tool, Basecamp's lack of robust user management and clunky interface exacerbate it's weaknesses for larger teams.
Basecamp helps organize your projects
- Notifies selected users of new tasks.
- Easily share large files.
- Combines all work into easily accessible files.
- Better organization of multiple tasks under different projects
Basecamp was a great document management tool
- The user interface was simple to use.
- I did not need any training.
- Versions were clear.
- User comments as they related to versions were clear.
- Basecamp is a great file storage solution but as a PM I did not feel it covered other areas of Project Management.
- I found it difficult to really understand where a number of items were in the process based on the setup and resorted to using a MS mpp stored in the file storage.
- Ultimately I spent a lot of time looking for information that I thought was pivotal to being a project tracking tool.
Basecamp - Project Tracking & Collaboration
- Issue tracking - having a contact log for issues that ensures tracking to completion.
- Document management - documents such as specification, designs and basic screenshots can be added and retrieved easily.
- User interface - the solution is simple to use and intuitive enough that only the most basic of training is required, even for non-technical team members.
- Multi-media support - it would be good to be able to preview multi-media files.
It won't replace MS Project, but it will replace your share drive.
- Though we don't necessarily use this how it's designed, we do use it to coordinate projects across multiple departments. It allows us to have not only a shared calendar for all of our different marketing efforts, it also is a place to keep all of the collateral we need for each project in one place.
- We are able to use this to share documents, images, and various checklists to keep everyone on the same page. It serves as a shared repository of different pieces of information, helping to avoid silos and getting us over having to rely on share drives and email communications.
- We can manage a schedule with Basecamp that holds all of our different teams accountable to the projects that are being managed - which is great when we have so many things going on with departments who don't often communicate with each other.
- There's no way to share just the calendar without also including someone on a project. So, people may receive information that doesn't pertain to them, and then it can create some question of separating the signal from the noise on important projects.
- There is no versioning available for items added to Basecamp - so your options are either to replace historical documents with the new ones, or to append the new documents and try to be clear about the order of importance.
- They removed the milestone functionality from calendar events, which was a nice way to manage things on the calendar and to mark them as complete. We've worked around it by creating a "Done" calendar and migrating completed calendar events to that project.
Basecamp Life
- It keeps us organized and structured such that we know what needs to be provided and by who.
- Tasks are given out to each member with email reminders
- Holds the team accountable for the various tasks that need to be accomplished.
- The initial setup is sometimes tedious, but after it is done, you can copy the format for all other projects
Basecamp....meh
It is currently being used by only our department.
Basecamp eliminates combing through 100's of past emails to find versions or conversations with coworkers. It's a place where an entire project can live and exist. It creates transparency in the creative process.
- Consolidates project documents
- Increases transparency
- Eliminates the need for 1 off emails
- It can be insanely disorganized depending on the user
- Without the proper training it ends up being more of a hassle than it's worth
- It can be time consuming to manage all projects inside BC
Unfortunately for people who are not technically inclined and don't understand organization it ends up being a complete disaster. Finding files, or comments becomes a nightmare. So training is required.
