If you have a large catalogue of products, like we do, BigCommerce is a great solution. If you're selling 1-10 products, you might find Shopify or Square a better solution

Also, it's not for businesses that don't sell physical products online. If you have a service-based business, or a course/info business, there are other solutions out there.

BigCommerce is very powerful

BigCommerce is suitable for most ecommerce sites as the base platform allows you to sell online and is very robust. The variety of 3rd party plugins and add in is very strong. I would say if your looking for an all in one platform, the inventory aspect can be a weak point if your say selling packages that contain individual sellable items, those cannot be tracked.
