We use NXT daily! It is our primary CRM system, which contains all of our donor and prospect information. It connects with our database where we can pull reports. The system allows us to put in all constituent data and information and updates for digital and phone communications, along with gift data.

We are constantly looking in NXT when we are looking to communicate or gather information on our constituents. Analytics and data intelligence are key to our area! Our advancement service folks are constantly in the system researching and updating information for the front line fundraisers to be able to use. We are able to communicate with our constituents in the way that they want to be communicated with and we have accurate information about them as well.

We use the database view for RE as well, which is where we can delve deeper into reports.

A Review of RE NXT

Events, development, operations, communications research, and major gift giving. Everyone in the organization uses it for something.
We need someone in the office who can troubleshoot logging in, addressing issues, and teaching people how to use the program quite frequently.

  • Financial records of constituents
  • Emails to send out content to (and post addresses)
  • Data analytics and trends
  • We add all our researchers and research constituents into it.
  • I think we will just do a better job at using it in the ways we do.
I don't know what other program options we have that are out there. It's not that it's the best program ever, but it's expensive and complicated, so once you've invested in it, you want to stick with it. It also has the coordination with Financial Edge, which is important for us.
  • Without a database we'd be up a creek. It's hard to evaluate or compare to what other options there are, because there really isn't any competition in this field for our size of org.
RE NXT is being used by our organization as a means for tracking all of our constituents. We rely heavily on the database to build our major gift pipeline and track the entire process from solicitation to stewardship. It's essential for our development needs. We haven't come across any other platform that works this way for non-profit organizations.
  • Good at pipeline tracking.
  • Good at showing statistics and analytics at a high level (down to real specifics) that assist with decision making and strategy.
  • There is still a heavy reliance on RE7, meaning we have to use a program that looks like it was developed in 1990 for a majority of our work. This really needs to be resolved.
It's very expensive, so you have to use it for all your major gift and annual giving tracking and constituent records for it really to be worth it. If you're not doing fundraising, then there are more economical options. The program also has a lot of limitations and gitches, that you need to work through.
  • Operational Efficiency
  • Increased revenue from new donors
  • Increased revenue from existing donors
It's great that it is now in the cloud, so we can access it from anywhere. This is a big step up, and the interface on RE NXT is contemporary and makes it a program that people on the team actually want to use. The tracking and analytic data it provides really does help with donor engagement (new, and existing).
We use Financial Edge for our payables, and the two programs speak to each other. This is nice.

For our newsletters and communications we use OLX, which is a fine program. Mainly because it speaks all together. However you have to use RE7 to access it - this could be stepped up so it could function within RE NXT itself.
As was stated in the previous entry

  • Product Features
  • Prior Experience with the Product
The product features are essential, and so we needed to go with the product that satisfied our key needs. CANFAR has used the product for a number of years, without any other products to really compare it to. The history of our constituent records, and the integration with our email communications and finances make it advantageous.
I don't think we would do anything differently.
  • Vendor implemented
Change management was a minor issue with the implementation
It was a process, and took effort getting people to use it. It takes effort motiviating and training staff to use RE NXT, especially when they weren't using RE7 because of the challenge they had trying to navigate that program. With time it came that staff were using it more and feeling better about the program.
  • Training staff
  • The time it took away from other projects to complete the transition
I don't. It wasn't handled by myself.
  • Self-taught
If you have someone who can train you from your company, it's the best, because you want to learn how they are using the program particulars for your company - some things are very specific, and some components aren't used at all. It definitely requires someone to walk you through it.
There are times when there are long line ups and can be incredibly slow and responsive, on very critical things. Glad there is support services, but they could be improved. There are also the larger issues with RE that are slowly being addressed, and very slowly being added to RE NXT from RE 7, but still work to do.
They were great with setting things up with us, and very responsive at this point. It's more so the larger limitations of the programs and the clunkiness, particularly of RE7 that makes it quite difficult to use. The programs have not been updated as quickly as I would have assumed them to be.
  • The RE NXT pages are easy to use and review
  • The log in can be incredibly cumbersome
  • Dealing with the limitations and the need to bounce between RE NXT adn RE 7 is a real hassle. RE 7 is ugly and yet a number of key functions obligate you to use it
  • Adding accounts for people can be a hassle.
Yes, but I don't use it
It works, but it's not something that is automatically intuitive. You need to spend time with it. One of the larger challenges is how hard it is to keep it clean, and to adjust all the components to making it simple. The limitations of some functions and requirement for using Re7 for a number of tasks is a real limitation.
I don't understand the specifics of the question.
When outages come, they are definitely felt! They come a few times a year, and can be quite a hassle. Sometimes the program isn't completely down, but is still slowed right down and creates complications.

Not sure what the solution is for this, but ideal if the company can sort it out.
It's fine. It's not the fastest, but not the slowest either. The real limitations come in how difficult it is to pull reports, or how to segment parts of information. This isn't an issue of not knowing how to do something - we've followed up with staff and there are actual limitations that make work harder.

Easy to organize donors and gifts each day or yearly.

I still stand by what I've said before.
  • Don't know
I've worked here for almost 24 years. When I started Raisers Edge, AP, GL and Payroll were separate pieces of software and it was ALL dos. It has come a long way over the last 24 years. I can't imagine using anything else. It's great software and has a wonderful support system.
  • In-person training
It was good...a little overwhelming when the GL was introduced but it didn't take long before it was a breeze.
Yes
You never know what crisis might pop up...it's good to have them to help you solve whatever your problem might be.
They always help us out...even if they have to go back to the "drawing board"...they'll solve the problem and walk you right through it until you are well satisfied.
Yes
It's been awhile but I remember it having something to do with the Chart of Accounts in the GL. It took a day or two but they came back with a workable solution.
Payroll is very important to all of us so when the numbers weren't working Blackbaud stayed right with us until we were satisfied with the results.
  • Easy to search what funds received donations and how much.
  • Easy to create merge files.
  • Easy to post to GL.
  • Easy to perform address changes.
  • Easy to perform queries.
  • I think it's all relatively simple and easy.
  • There isn't anything difficult. If I had to pick one it would be exports but they're fairly easy.
Yes
Super simple and easy for the most proficient or to the newbie.
It has everything we need to maintain information on all of our alumni...including their gifts/donations and a way to keep track of who has donated what and when. Then the ability to create "thank you" letters and receipts is great, too. The event management is a lifesaver. It keep track of the alumni that are attending, who their guests are and where they are to be seated. Keep up the good work, Blackbaud!
Because it's an amazing product...adjustable to any size organization.
The only time we have issues with it or we can't use it is when our electricity or internet is on the fritz.
Most reports load instantly. Can't think of any that don't.

It went rather smoothly. Slight hiccups here and there but overall was great.

I am the in house support for Raiser's Edge NXT and I am the constituent database manager. I have worked with donor databases for 8 years and Raiser's Edge for 5 of those years.
  • We use queries on a daily basis and I love how much information you can easily pull in queries.
  • Being able to store so much information on donor records is a huge advantage
  • Batching and processing of gifts is extremely easy.
  • Having the mobile app has been a huge benefit for our fundraisers because they are now able to look up basic information on donors to prepare for a meeting instead of having to call me from the road to look up information on donor records.
  • We did not expect to utilize the email marketing tool in Online Express as often as we have and it has been a pleasant surprise.
  • I would like to see us use the events module more.
Everyone in my office is happy and comfortable with Raiser's Edge NXT. The price is somewhat of a concern, but it is a great product and is head and shoulders above the other donor databases I have worked with.
  • Since we have a smaller staff, I worry we are spending too much on Raiser's Edge since we are not able to use it to its fullest capacity.
Raiser's Edge NXT is used by my whole organization as our donor database, consisting of around 63,000 constituents. We use it to keep track of our donors' contact information and their giving history. It addresses many problems for us. Most importantly, it gives us an easy way to record incoming gifts and send out acknowledgment letters in a timely fashion.
  • The program itself is very user friendly, especially if you have previous experience with donor databases.
  • You are easily able to pull very detailed reports that can be helpful in identifying lapsed donors or donors who have a higher giving capacity.
  • Being able to access the Raiser's Edge app on your phone or tablet is very helpful for getting information about a donor on the go to help prepare you for a meeting.
  • I would like to see the dashboard tab improved a little bit to give more detailed information and also for it to be slightly more accurate than it currently is.
  • We have one team member who uses a Microsoft Surface Pro as her work computer and she has run into quite a few compatibility issues, so that is something that could be improved.
I think Raiser's Edge NXT is probably best suited for medium to large sized organizations for the simple fact of how much it costs annually.
  • Operational Efficiency
  • Increased revenue from new donors
  • Increased revenue from existing donors
  • Reduced IT expenditure due to cloud deployment
I think we have been able to achieve all of the boxes I checked above. The biggest thing that I like is that I no longer have to depend on our IT department to handle updates and/or issues I have. Our IT department is small and they have many things to handle on a daily basis, so not having to wait days to get my issues resolved has been a big help and has allowed us to operate more efficiently and get full use out of the product.
We also use Online Express and that has been great. We have not run into any issues with online donations coming over seamlessly into Raiser's Edge and having that seamless transition has been a big help to us and has allowed us to process online donations in a much more timely fashion than we were before.
I used DonorPerfect at a previous job and while it was good, it does not come close to providing the same user experience as Raiser's Edge. I did not find the reporting feature to be all that helpful and was severely limited on how much information I could pull on the donors in our database.

Product usability was the most important factor to me. I find RE NXT to be user friendly for the most part and that makes training new employees much easier.

  • Educating the staff on how to access Raiser's Edge NXT.
  • Explaining the difference between having Raiser's Edge hosted by Blackbaud vs. our IT department.
The implementation process could not have been easier. We had very little down time during the process and the NXT team was very helpful with any questions or issues that arose. We did not lose any data during the process and were able to assume normal business operations as soon as it was back up and running.
  • Self-taught
It was easy to learn without formal training because I had a lot of previous experience with Raiser's Edge and was able to train our other employees. I do not think this approach would work for other organizations unless they had someone who was very knowledgeable about Raiser's Edge and is good at teaching that information to others.
I personally think it is just right. There are some employees in my organization who do not have much database experience and they are overwhelmed with all of RE NXT's functions when they first start using it, so for less experienced database users, I could see it being too extensive or complex.
I do not.
No - we have not done any customization to the interface
Some - we have added small pieces of custom code
I'm not sure if this is what you're asking for, but I have added multiple entries into tables and constituent codes. I have found this process to be easy and quick to do.

Yes
Being able to get quality support immediately is something worth paying for in my opinion.
I have never had a bad experience with a member of the Blackbaud support team. The vast majority of the time, the initial representative is able to answer my question or fix my issue in a timely manner and on the rare occasion where my problem has to be escalated, it is always taken care of within the time period I am initially given.
No
This is not a specific instance, but overall I could like to commend our account representative Richard Hull. Whenever I have a question or concern, he always gets back to me very promptly and his level of customer service always exceeds my expectations.
  • Running queries is very simple.
  • Creating and running dashboards.
  • Processing Online Express donations
  • I find some of the information being puled from Reports is not always accurate
  • Running global changes in the Admin tab can take a long time
Yes
My organization does not use this interface all that often, but I have never had an issue finding what I need to find using the mobile interface.
I think NXT is very user friendly and the amount of information you are able to extract from it is amazing. Using NXT has allowed my organization to access data we were unable to before switching to NXT and it has made my job as a Database Manager much easier. Whenever I have run into issues or do not understand one of the NXT features, the NXT support team is always very helpful and always points me in the right direction.
Raiser's Edge seems like it has endless capabilities and could be easily scaled.
The only reason I cannot give a 10 is because like all web based products, internet connection is required and that is not something that can be counted on 100% of the time. When the internet connection is stable, I have had little to no issues using Raiser's Edge.
I think RE NXT provides a wealth of knowledge that was previously unavailable or much harder to access. I also think the Blackbaud support team has been great helping me navigate any issues or questions I encountered when my organization switched over to NXT.

When importing spreadsheets into RE NXT, I find the process to be very long and cumbersome. It sometimes take me multiple times importing a file to get all of the fields matched up. I also have had issues in the past of new records being created instead of updating current records.
I do not have specific recommendations, but I would love to see the import process simplified if at all possible.
I have never had an issue with a Blackbaud employee.
I have received nothing by top notch customer service from Blackbaud.
The main thing we agreed on was a 3 year fixed price contract. Locking in the same annual renewal amount is very helpful for our organization when it comes to budgeting.

Raiser's Edge NXT is currently used by our Development department. As our data becomes cleaner, we are discussing other individuals who would benefit from access to it. NXT allows our fundraisers to easily and efficiently see the information they need in order to better understand our donors. Intuitive reporting and a user-friendly interface saves our fundraisers time and energy.
  • The work center is wonderful for keeping track of prospects. The automatically populating tags on donors records make keeping in touch a breeze.
  • The easy-to-read charts and graphs in the analysis portion of NXT gives you clear visual representations of progress towards fundraising goals and allows you to see trends from year to year over campaigns, appeals, and funds.
  • NXT is a powerful tool and you need clean data to make it useful. NXT has allowed us to see data holes that need attention.
  • Details about events and other modules found in Raiser's Edge don't always translate to NXT. However, new features are constantly being added.
  • Certain analytic features such as Gifts by Constituent Code are only useful if that information is tracked in Raiser's Edge.
  • Once in a while the lag between the actual database and NXT is extensive.
NXT is great for fundraisers that need information on the go and may not be as computer savvy as regular database users. NXT is a great guide to see how your fundraising efforts are paying off and to gain a better understanding of your constituents. It isn't, however, the be all end all of reporting. More extensive and detailed reports still need to be generated from other sources.
  • Operational Efficiency
The main goal for our organization was to increase operational efficiency. NXT saves us time because of the user-friendly interface. Fundraisers are no longer required to go through extensive database training in order to obtain information about the donors in their portfolios. Our database users are also freed from pulling surface-level reports and donor information and can focus on other data-related tasks.
Coupled with Raiser's Edge, Raiser's Edge NXT has proven to be a very valuable tool. Working with and understanding the database is a challenge and not all of our staff has the time to invest in learning the software. NXT allows our fundraisers to easily access the information that is most relevant to their work and the learning curve is very low. Whenever problems are encountered, help resources, such as the knowledgebase and support chat, make it easy to resolve any issues.
It was a very easy process and involved little staff time to implement. It's been a great tool for our fundraisers and has helped identify holes in our data that require attention. Overall, NXT has been very worthwhile.
New features are constantly being added to Raiser's Edge NXT that expand its capabilities. Features such as constituent mapping and easily accessible actions allow for more in-depth analysis of existing constituents. The future ability to manipulate soft-credits and customize reporting dashboards will make NXT even more attractive to our fundraisers and executives. It's great to see that the software is evolving.
