BMC Atrium CMDB fills the gap that all other competitors try to fulfill. The in-depth detailing and foresight of building the whole encompassing solution is mind boggling to say the least. The ability to track/monitor/maintain millions of objects in a vastly growing CMDB is a challenge not to left to the amateurs...it's a job for the

Professionals!

  • Tracking expired assets
  • Building a trackable relationship between users and equipment.
  • Enableing Change management to predict potential conflicts.
  • Speed and flexiability
If your corporation has less than a 500 employees this may not be the solution for you but then again it may be depending on your business. We currently only use it to store information on our servers for our IT departments. However, we are looking at expanding this to include more non-IT type information such as creating assets for locations and things which would help assist with our IT Service Desk such as mobile phones and computer workstations.
  • Atrium CMDB integration with Remedy and SmartIT are great! It's very simple to select an asset which is affected by a work ticket.
  • The storage capacity of information which can be saved into the CMDB is vast. It's not limited to IT based assets only.
  • The vast ability of storage of an asset in the CMDB. While it is a great feature, it is also an area of potential catastrophe. It is akin to only driving a basic automatic car for years and then being put into the seat of an Formula 1 racer. If you don't know what you're doing, better prepare for disaster.
  • To utilize any advanced features of the Atrium CMDB, you'll want to look into some sort of training. Otherwise, you will have a large mess to clean up and getting rid of a mess of this size and potential magnitude is a large undertaking.
Atrium CMDB is very flexible and can meet needs both small and great. If you're looking to have a central location for all asset information, regardless of type (hardware, software, people, phones, location, etc), Atrium CMDB provides a great value. Especially if you are looking at tying this information into a ticketing system for affected assets. It can also be tied in with BMC Discovery, which will auto update the CMDB with its own discovered data. This is where the product really shines.

We are using the BMC Atrium CMDB to keep track of our assets primarily from the parent host system to individual components such as CPU, software, memory, processor etc. The CMDB is quite easy to customize and thus, this is why I really support the BMC's edition of the CMDB. This helps us track our IT assets, how much they cost, and helps us plan for future upgrades.
  • Managing computer systems & components
  • Associating costs and financial data
  • Associating Incidents, Changes, Problems, Releases, etc
  • Normalizing and Reconciliation Engine
  • Better financial systems, depreciation, chargebacks, etc
  • Easier time to customize the forms
Discovering all of an org's assets is very well suited and associating each asset to other assets. This helps IT get a visual picture of the topology of the company.

Manual updates however, are less suited. I heard that a computer manufacturer used Remedy to help track each component that is used in their computer manufacturing process. However, without an iron tight process, the chance of failure would be high and this would be a highly manual process.
