Camtasia is being used in two ways at our organization. First, for screen-recording, which is what it is probably most known for. It has become the industry standard for screen-recording over the last decade. Second, and probably most important to our organization, it has become our solution for entry-level video editing. Camtasia is a powerful video editor and it has filled a big need in our organization by allowing new users to quickly begin editing training videos. We are producing a large number of videos each year, but we only had a couple of people with editing skills using software like Adobe Premiere Pro, which has a high learning curve. Camtasia is more affordable and allows us to spin up additional editors on our team that create quality videos.
  • Screen Recording - Camtasia has all the tools that you need to create a professional screen-recording for your company.
  • Video Editing - Camtasia is a very competent video editor, especially for entry level users.
  • Training - Camtasia has a large online library of training videos that will get new users up and running quickly.
  • Video Editing Shortcuts - Camtasia does video editing so well that you quickly want to use more advance functionality like that found in Adobe Premiere Pro. However, Camtasia does not have some of the speed editing feature that you find in the more advance programs.
  • Stock Content - Camtasia comes with some stock music, titles, and transition, and although the library has grown over time, it still isn't up to some of the competitors.
  • Multi-track Timeline Functionality - Camtasia does have multi-track editing and it does work well for what it does, but it hasn't advanced much over time.
Just this year I have recommended Camtasia to a handful of employees on our team. We actually combined our licensing to a Team account so everyone had access to the program. We needed everyone to have basic video editing skills on our training team and Camtasia is the best solution for that, especially on Windows where programs like iMovie are not available for free. Additionally, it lives in that sweet spot between basic programs like Windows Video Editor and Adobe Premiere Pro. We have had our trainers release professional-looking videos to our entire customer base using Camtasia to edit the videos.
  • We have saved thousands of dollars on outside video editing fees by using Camtasia in-house.
  • We have saved hundreds of dollars in licensing fees by using Camtasia instead of subscription based licensing from Adobe.
  • We have increased our training output by enabling more of our trainers to begin editing videos using Camtasia.
Our advanced editors use programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, but we only have about 5-6 employees that have that skill level. That isn't enough to support our video output. Camtasia allows everyone that is not at that level to create quality videos with a much lower learning curve.

Our primary user group for Camtasia is our Learning & Development department. However, we also have users in I.T., Sales, and H.R. The latter three groups use it less often. Our training department is using it on a weekly basis to edit videos that are being released to our internal team of Sales and Service.

I am the point person for our Team license for L&D and all other areas have individual licenses. We have several users that are advisors when questions arise about using the software. However, Camtasia has such a robust library of video training that there really isn't much support that needs to be done once it is deployed.
  • Screen Recording
  • Video Editing
  • Training Asset Creation
Each release of Camtasia has added just enough functionality to justify the upgrade to the new version. I like that Camtasia is not a subscription-based product as we have more flexibility and control over our spend on the product. We can also purchase support packages that include the next version when released.
Camtasia is one of the easiest video editing products that I have ever used. We have had people start using Camtasia and have their first edit done within the same day. Camtasia training videos are organized in a way that prioritizes the most basic skills first, so users can focus on that and then build on their skills when they have more time or the need arises.
  • Basic Screen-recording
  • Basic Video Editing
  • Basic Video Transitions
  • Sound Editing - Just not enough there to really make much of difference
  • Speed editing once you have been using the program for a while

We use Camtasia to produce marketing videos, to edit our webinar videos, and to edit or create training videos. If we want to show the customer how to perform a particular function in the system we create a video that's a few minutes long that can be emailed. We also record training sessions and then edit them later for emphasis. This software is used by the marketing department.
  • It is incredibly quick and easy to create a short training video.
  • It allows us to place opening and closing slides with our company info on every video.
  • So far it's been able to do everything we've needed it to do.
  • Noise reduction hasn't worked well for us.
  • Sometimes the video (with audio) hasn't had the quality that we expected.
  • If you have to manipulate the audio and the video it can be a bit tedious and time consuming.
  • We've had a few edited videos that "jump" at the beginning.
Well suited for training videos, and for manipulating recorded sessions, such as training or webinars. You can add music, introduction clips, end slides with your company information, end credits, etc. to make those videos look professional. For training videos that are only a couple of minutes long, the resulting mp4 is small enough to be emailed. There's several options for size, quality, etc. We've used it for marketing videos but have had some quality issues there (perhaps it is a novice user issue).
  • Camtasia has allowed us to provide professional videos to our customers.
  • Camtasia was not as expensive as some competitors.
  • We have had to research how to do some items, but overall we've found TechSmith support to be good.
Never could really get the hang of MadCap.
We only contacted support one time but the response was fast and the question was answered to our satisfaction. The person answering our emails seemed to investigate the issue thoroughly and followed up with us later to make sure that the problem was solved. They were also very courteous.
  • Importing a video and editing out the parts you don't want.
  • Adding a soundtrack, an opening clip and and closing slide with company info.
  • Recording a clip from a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Editing multiple items into a finished product can be tedious and time consuming. If you are editing out parts, inserting callouts or highlighting parts, then trying to manipulate several tracks, it can be frustrating.
  • There are some things that are not intuitive and hard to find. However, if you research online you will get lots of results and we've found an answer each time.
Yes, but I don't use it
It does everything we've wanted it to do so far. The only issues we've had is finding things, as in "how do I do this" and some quality issues. However, we've found answers readily online and on YouTube, and we have either been able to resolve quality issues by trial and error, or by increasing the video dimensions. We aren't a professional video shop, though we think when we make our own marketing videos they have come out professional looking.

Camtasia is currently being used at our institution as a mid-range capture and editing platform for faculty, students, and staff. They are typically guided to use Camtasia over our simpler solutions if they need to add media into their production after recording - including photos, video, text, or music. Camtasia is a benefit to those users who need a slightly more robust solution (beyond simply capture and delivery), and allows them to learn only one piece of software for both creation, manipulation, and exporting a compressed file ready for delivery. We only retain a limited number of licenses because many users are satisfied with our simpler platform and only need capture and basic trimming features.
  • Provides an all-in-one software for capture and editing
  • Guides users through the process of using the software for the first time
  • Allows voiceover and editing in one system without the need to export/transfer and re-time or re-edit to align the VO with the visuals
  • There are very frequent updates recently, and with little to no improvement - but consistently bothering the user to upgrade whenever the software is opened.
  • Deploying site-wide can be frustrating unless you buy a certain number of licenses and qualify for centralized license management
  • It offers too many features in some cases - lots of things like animation and greenscreen are never touched by our users, and it would be nice to have an alternative UI or cheaper version that is even more watered down.
Camtasia is great for new users who have never edited before but need more capability than something like iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. Camtasia is not as well suited for true beginners who only need to record and deliver because the interface quickly feels overwhelming. It is also not a full-featured NLE for professionals, as the media options, effects, and exporting leaves much to be desired.
  • Single licenses allow for us to deploy a limited mid-range solution for editing and capture
Camtasia is more robust than ilos or other capture only or capture and delivery only systems. It has more features to add in content after you record (annotations, text, media) and to update your recording at a later date. It is less featured than full NLEs like Premiere in the amount of control you get and the flexibility it offers.
  • Trimming videos (from the end or removing a section in the middle)
  • recording/replacing voiceover
  • Exporting - it defaults to an export option that includes HTML, java and other files that are completely unnecessary unless you are hosting your own website. Not intuitive at all for the average video creator
  • Adjusting and finding audio controls has gotten more difficult over the past years
  • splitting audio and video to adjust each independently of the other
No
The look is slick but it doesn't favor the most frequently used tools (fades, mute audio, add text callout) over other less frequently used/unnecessary features (animations, greenscreen, etc.)

Camtasia is regularly used in collaboration with my clients to record, edit and create training videos for on-demand learning and education.
  • Easy editing of pre-made videos - Often I get videos made by others that have issues. Camtasia makes it easy to take those videos apart and put them back together again
  • Importing media; audio, images, other clips and transitions - makes it much easier to assemble my video and adjust it
  • export video - several options based on your need, your audience and the type of viewing experience you want your end user to have
  • Always have to remember that the original file is in a proprietary format and can sometimes get saved in locations on your hard drive that are hard to find. A warning or instructions when saving would be helpful.
  • Sometimes for no reason the "start from the beginning" button doesn't work and you have to manually slide to the beginning of your creation.
  • I'd like to see annotations and highlights that I added to my clips move with the image if I adjust it. Otherwise I find that my annotations and additions are slightly off during playback and I have to go back and adjust them again.
  • Would love to have a collaboration feature where two people in different locations could work on the same video at the same time, or at least switch back and forth in the creation.
Well suited for:
Creating explainer videos
Adjusting the sound and video when they dont line up
Converting a video for use in another platform - example - converting a windows file to an mp4 for use in Adobe Connect
uploading to Screencast for easier access by end users
Creating training videos
  • Camtasia has allowed me to offer new services to my clients who don't have the time or experience to create their own content
  • Camtasia has reduced the time I have to spend editing and creating detailed and engaging videos for training
iMovie is too complicated and can only be done on a Mac - I use both Mac and PC
No
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
Ease of use. Editing, creating and organization material in a video can be time consuming and confusing. I think its much easier with Camtasia
Thats the point - the process was easy because once I tried it, it worked. why look further?
  • importing media
  • manipulating media in the timebar, adding transitions and annotations
  • adjusting the transitions to the right length and start time
No
If it had a few more prompts and tips while using that would make it easier

Camtasia is used by several faculty members in various departments across campus and my office, Instructional Technology, to create instructional videos.
Faculty find Camtasia to be a useful asynchronous lecture recording tool, as it has a simplistic PowerPoint integration that allows for easy lecture recording, and the editing features within Camtasia are fairly intuitive and not intimidating. While some faculty members use Camtasia to create tutorial videos or videos to support in-class lecture, most of our faculty using Camtasia practices a flipped classroom model for instruction.
For Instructional Technology, Camtasia is great for creating how-to videos to introduce faculty to new tech tools on campus and guide faculty through the implementation of new features within tech tools we user regularly, such as updates in our learning management system.
  • Video Recording in PowerPoint - The PowerPoint integration makes video lectures recording via Camtasia straightforward. Once a video is recorded, users are naturally prompted to edit and produce within the Camtasia software, which makes for a smooth transition between applications.
  • Creating and Editing Screencast How-Tos - The editing features of Camtasia make it easy to produce quality, focused screencast tutorials.
  • In order to use the interactive quiz functions, videos must be produced and shared via Screencast, which is a limitation. Additionally, the actual quiz result reporting options are limited and a bit clunky in design.
Camtasia is great for creating lecture recordings and screencasts; however, it doesn't have extensive interactive whiteboard features, so faculty often find themselves limited in this way.
  • Camtasia is a bit pricey, but it's intuitive and has extensive features that other video tools for education lack. It's worth every penny.
Camtasia is by-far the better product for creating instructional videos in an Education setting, because it's reliable and doesn't have a steep learning curve. They also have an incredible suite of tutorial videos to accommodate new users, so there is no need to tirelessly search YouTube for help. From video creation, the editing, to production, everything is Camtasia is straight-forward and not intimidating, even to novice users.
  • Video and Screencast Recording
  • Video Editing
  • Adding Animations and Special Features
  • Video Production
  • Analyzing Interactive Quiz Results
No
I haven't used another video recording and editing tools that is as comprehensive and straight-forward as Camtasia. Typically, if you want a user-friendly video editing tools for novice users, you have to compromise on features. Camtasia solves this problem by offering extensive editing features in a simplistic, user-friendly environment. Highly recommend!
