We are using Carbonite server backup as or current backup solution for 6 servers. We are also using the desktop version for key players within the organization. The intention of bringing the products in is to have a safety net in a place other than Microsoft's built-in shadow copy system.

It is well suited when backing up a small number of servers on a timed schedule.

  • We have a safety net that we didn't have before.
  • Key players are now backed up through an automated system that was easy to silently install.
  • The resources used impacted our exchange server negatively and slowed email until it was disabled.
I prefer code42's admin console, it was cleaner, more responsive, and easier to navigate. The backup system was very similar.

  • ensuring that our servers are properly backed up
  • reliability when it comes to knowing that backups are being executed on the proper schedule as required
  • We were able to backup an older systems that is not supported by carbonite by settings backups to be executed by Windows but outputting those backups to a server that carbonite can backup
  • we are currently using carbonite server to its full extent within my org
We packaged carbonite server with the end user product that they provide but we have had issues where the end user site has been down for days at time and backups for both server and user are backing up but we do not the get notification that it was completed for several days. There appears to be latency issues with the mail delivery for completed backups. Additionally, I have used other backup products and find the Carbonite website interface very clunkly and difficult to navigate.

Knowing that this is a good quality product is extremely important especially in today's environment due to constant product upgrades and re-branding which on occasion changes major functions within the product
I honestly think I would have demoed a few trial period of another well known product prior to the renewal, unfortunately we were up against a renewal deadline which forced our hand a little quicker than I would have liked.

We use Carbonite Server Backup across the whole organization. We are using it to backup the VM, SQL, Oracle DB and Exchange server Backup. This has solved the problem of hardware utilization, as we store data in their cloud vault.
  • Granular restore for application and file level restore are very good and simple
  • Web central control is very simple and straight forward for configuration backup
  • Director server configuration is easy and simple to setup
  • The backup report really needs improvement. It is really pathetic, as it gives wrong information. It is not suitable for auditing.
  • The Exchange DAG backup should support instead of configuring each exchange server.
  • Cloud infrastructure supports a lot of AWS and Azure instances that are coming up.
This is suitable for VM infra and physical server backup. It offers application level backup and restore. However, it does not support DAG backup. It offers very good data management as you don't have to worry about the space utilized in the Cloud vault or Base vault. Not suitable for audit report, and it won't be available if there are any business needs that you failed. We have suffered in this section as we could not provide the reports to our audit team. We failed and the product itself failed. Not advanced compared with Veeam, Druva, and Acronis backups.

  • Again, for some time, we had negative impact when they changed the notification setup. We could not get notifications for a long time. They did not inform user about the changes.
  • They modified the cloud data access method and users were not aware of this. Previously users had visibility of which data was available at their Base vault.
  • We had a disaster in one of our Hyper-v environments because of hardware failure. We could restore complete servers without any trouble or assistance with Evault. It is very easy to restore the VM level. It also take much less time.
We migrated from NetBackup as we wanted to get rid of our Tape library and media used. We also compared with Veeam to replace the Carbonite server backup. We changed our plan, as we needed storage. It is not in our budget. We continued with Carbonite as they are cheaper in cloud.

One who knows the backup concepts and has worked hands on in Windows and VMware.
  • VMware Backup
  • Application level backup includes SQL and exchange
  • Hyper-V Backup
  • Backups directly to cloud
  • Virtual Appliance option for Backup storage (ERA)
  • CDR to have the yearly DR test
  • We have used most of the features and we are waiting for support to cloud instances.
Carbonite Server Backup does not integrate or support any reporting; it is not good at it. We required monthly and quarterly reports for audit. If we fail in that we get fined or we have to pay a certain amount of money to customer. It does not support cloud instances and we are using N2WS for the cloud instances. This is an additional burden for customers.

The most important factor for our decision was it has hardware as well as cloud storage or we call it a hybrid. It has good space saving features where it stores only block level changes instead of file level changes.
I might look for the future features where we dont have to regret a specific feature. Even though it is costly product, we prefer to have features which support all variety of devices from handheld to Cloud.
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled
The product set up is not complicated we have received all the required things.
  • There were none.
We had appliance and we just needed to setup the Director Console which was straight forward and easy.
Some of the requests we could not get resolved on time. They took a long time to provide the reason for the issue we had raised.
Yes
We had an issue with generating reports and later found that they do have problems with the reporting.
There are no such cases, but 80% of the time we got our problem solved. We had no issue with most of the cases.
  • Granular restore of files
  • Mail level restore or granular level restore of exchange
  • VM level restore
  • Reports have a lot of incorrect data.
  • Large VMs are not supported; it has increased for years now. I think it is better.
No
Product needs a lot of improvements in some features like Cloud and Reporting.
