C4D is used for 3D product video animations, marketing renders, and virtual reality asset creation and optimization. It seamlessly ingests engineering files and allows for far more complexity than 2D-only videos. With plugins like X-Particles, we can simulate air and waterflow, a core function of many of our data center products.
  • Stability.
  • Ease of use.
  • Compatibility with plugins and render engines.
  • Weak UV mapping interface.
  • Redshift integration is not 100% seamless yet.
  • Weight-mapping is a nightmare.
C4D has one of the gentlest learning curves and highest responsiveness of any 3D package. New version releases are characteristically ambitious without sacrificing cleanliness of interface or usability. It's best suited for 3D animations and virtual reality efforts, as well as 3D compositing for film. It also very efficiently supports physical simulation plugins (X-Particles, turbulenceFD, etc.) and has a robust motion graphics module lending itself to quick and fun experimentation. Character animation can be a struggle through dozens of necessary plugins, but 3D character animation in general is as hard as it gets in this field.
  • Virtual Reality efforts are a huge hit at events and among investors and customers.
  • 3D Animation projects have been halved as far as time spent vs. previous preferred package (3DS Max).
C4D is more responsive with an interface that works better for me. It is just as widely supported by render farms and plugins, so it edges out primarily on usability and speed. New users will not find 3DS Max intuitive, although I'm sure seasoned users find it very natural.
For reasons mentioned before: an intuitive interface and speed of the viewport, speed of loading, and ease of plugin integration. The MoGraph module encourages experimentation and the creation of highly modifiable scenes. Crashes are extremely rare and the support team and community are hyper-responsive to requests for help. For real... Maxon's staff hangs out in Slack and Discord communities, regularly assisting users with issues. No support ticket required.
Maxon's staff regularly hangs out in Slack and Discord communities, ready to assist. This goes beyond the support ticket system, which is also extremely robust. Hundreds of optimizations and bugs are fixed in every patch, even when the user experience is already 99.9% smooth. This is a proactive, not reactive, support and engineering team at Maxon.
