We are a mainly CISCO shop, so Junipers are out for the most part. We chose the ASR1001-x as it was an upgrade from the ASR1004 we were using previously. We required the ability to process a lot of traffic using 1G and 10G interfaces, with scalability and security features that match.

It is all in one solution that attracts first. The administrator does not have to bother to configure multiple devices for Wi-Fi, VPN, Telephony, and Routing. This router has all in one with very easy to configure web portal.

  • Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
The Cisco ISR 1000 series of router is a fixed configuration device which means that it is deployed in sites where there is unlikely to be changes in Wan or internet termination type. You do however have the flexibility that is built into the features of the Cisco IOS operating system. If you think that you may need additional modules built into the platform then one would naturally select the Cisco ISR 4000 series.

Generally speaking, Cisco routers can be very evenly matched with Juniper routers. Key differentiation for me is industry understanding, first party support, future-friendly development, and overall dependency. I know when it comes to hiring new engineers I'm also more likely to find a larger pool of candidates who are already familiar with the Cisco platform than any other platform that is currently on the market.

We have used DLink and Fortinet Routers. I find Cisco superior in management, reliability and overall network performance over the two. I will say Fortinet has not experienced any failures and does provide very similar functionality, I simply find Cisco to be my preferred Router hardware. I further base this on support. When things go wrong and they often can in networking, they Support team is excellent in helping identify and resolve the issue quickly.

I have used many Cisco Layer two and layer three switches, POE switches. When a switch has been decommissioned due to being replaced or upgrades, I use the switch for training newly hired people on configuration and other tasks before allowing them access to the production network to instill the basic understanding of what must be accomplished.
