  • Cisco 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 9000) and Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)
The ISR routers offer a significant cost advantage over the ASR line of products. The ISR products are designed for smaller businesses that don't have the telephony needs of a large enterprise. Price is definitely the reason we went with this class of equipment. Beyond price, the biggest reason we selected Cisco as opposed to other vendors is the native functionality with Cisco Call Manager. SRST is a function that only works on Cisco equipment. Because it offers a business advantage by allowing us to receive customer calls, in an SD-WAN outage, we never really considered a different vendor. It was simply too big of a future to ignore.

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers are very good for enterprise networks. They can be used to connect SD-WAN, MPLS, and MetroLAN. They offer aggregate throughput and increased bandwidth. They also guarantee network quality of service to distinguish between different traffic in the network. They offer better features compared to the others.

The Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) are not as expensive or as feature-rich as the Cisco 4000 Series. Faster performance, better user interfaces, and more knowledgeable support are all features of the high-end series. MikroTik Routers and Switches can also be used to provide connectivity solutions, as can other networking technologies. Affordability aside, they do not match the quality and security offered by Cisco ISR 4000 Series.

As [I've] already [said], Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Service Routers is suited for branch-to-branch connectivity ( i.e Hub and Spoke Topology). [It is] also compatible [with] SD-WAN Technology. It [simplifies] network management, deploys networks in minutes, supports Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM)-based containers, [and] provides support for integrated applications. [Again], I'm not facing any issues from the [Cisco] ISR 4000!!

Mikrotik is another well-known router and switch brand in the market. It is a less costly product and contains a good amount of features. However, it is not built to handle the traffic of large enterprises or thousands of users. [The] Cisco ISR 4000 series, on the other hand, is an enterprise-class router with high-performance hardware. It handles huge amount of traffic very well.

Amongst other routers, we also use Mikrotik Routers to deliver connectivity solutions. Even though their price is much more attractive than the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers, they are not as reliable as the Cisco [ISR 4000].

FortiGate is a firewall and we can not terminate DATA and Internet on [the] same device. [Furthermore] , if we use it as a router on WAN, we will need unnecessary licenses for our product, which are not required. [Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)] is much richer in routing protocols than FortiGate.

We have been more than satisfied with the Cisco product line so we only considered Cisco routers and the 4000 series met the needs that we had. This was a fairly easy process. One in production we have had no issues with the product and I would install it again.

When we decided to upgrade and redesign our WAN, we wanted as few network devices per field office as possible to make it work. This solution is the only one at the time that enabled us to have such a simple network design, hardware purchase, setup, administration, and support cost.

The lower-end Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 1000) are not quite on the same price or feature level as the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000), obviously, but you can see other huge gains in almost every category. Speed, interface, and even support staff seem to be better when you move up to the higher-end series. It was an easy choice to move up to the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000).

We did not compare the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers to other competitors as we used Cisco for a long period of time already. We selected this product as we used a lot of CISCO products in the past and with good support. Other products don't have the protocols that CISCO products have.

The functionality of having Data and Voice in the router and expandability option helped in decision making. The features available for Voice infrastructure and also the total price in terms of Solution makes it a better option.

We faced a lot of issues with the instability of Junos IOS as it failed on different switches and we had to reinstall the devices from scratch. There are some implemented protocols that a Cisco propriety didn’t support on Juniper routers. Cisco support has a replacement for the devices within 4 hours with the 4000 series. With Juniper, they would replace the device on the next business day.

We have always used Cisco and this was the next model to upgrade to. So I can't say one way or another that another product is better or worse. but using all Cisco makes troubleshooting a lot easier as you can call one support line to take care of it all!

  • Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)
We are currently running Cisco ASR 1001-HX routers as our head-ends, where they are strictly handling data, and Cisco ISR 4000 routers at branch locations, where they are terminating multiple circuits and IPSec tunnels, acting as VoIP gateways, and running pfr and basic security. The ISR 4000s are obviously not as powerful, but they are very flexible and full-featured.

Support from vendor is great, response time for replacements is very fast (depends on your support contract level).
Vendor support forums have lots of cases you can use to find solutions to your problems or projects.

We are evaluating a move to SD-wan and a potential vendor is Silverpeak. The idea behind this is completely different and also Cisco offers an SD-WAN solution. It means that you don't have to deal with CLI anymore and it's just GUI.

We were planning to replace our old 800 Series routers as we were expanding the business and we opened a few more offices. My manager had worked at Cisco for years, and when he joined the company, he had already evaluated different platforms for branch routers and he recommended the 4000 series routers from personal experience. I did read some research and followed his suggestions and haven't looked back!
