What is Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software?

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) software is the core operating software for Cisco’s ASA suite. It supports a variety of specialized network security and firewall options, allowing users to modularize to their business needs. It is scaled for enterprises through “clustering” ASAs, enabling 128 Gbps processing load and 50 million concurrent connections.

Cisco ASA provides a robust VPN setup process and integrates with other Cisco security offerings, including Cloud Web security and Trustsec. CWS provides cloud-based systems security across public and private clouds, and Trustsec is a software-defined segmentation product that mitigates the scope of network threats and data breaches. The platform also supports IPv4 and IPv6, enabling a smoother evolution in Internet Protocols for users.

  • Easier administration of one platform across the business
  • Cross deploy certain policies for firewalls across all firewalls and from one central policy
  • one renewal per year for all devices
  • economics of scale with buying all devices from one vendor and getting larger discounts for more devices from that vendor

  • Positive: ASA and ASAv allowed us to transition from on-prem to the cloud very easily
  • Negative: ASAv's logging is not great. I can't tell which user logged on with which device. To get better logging, we'll need to add identity services to the ASA
  • Positive: Our cost of operation went down with the ASAv
  • Positive: We added a lot more staff and they were all able to enjoy the benefits of VPN, especially now that telecommuting is common

  • It's too costly.
  • An annual subscription is also a pain. Every time we go to the management there is a struggle for approval. This should be at least fixed for a 3-year period. (Not by requesting to pay I'm advance).

  • I know a customer who is still using a Pix[.]
  • The 5510 is still being used in one of our setups, and still doing its job this is a lot of Return on Investment.
  • We have managed to turn around projects quickly because most of our engineers understand this firewall very well. We deploy them in a matter of minutes[.]

  • For our company, Cisco's ASA and VPN capabilities were critical to its survival during the pandemic, and without them, we would not have been able to keep up.
  • An excellent Web Console GUI and easy-to-follow documentation make it simple to set up and use. In the DMZ, we can quickly set up port forwarding or use a public IP.
  • For troubleshooting an issue, I find Packet Tracer or Packet Capture very helpful. With Cisco's excellent support, problems are resolved more quickly, which has a positive effect.
