We have multiple models of MX series connecting multiple branches for a nationally distributed WAN, allowing remote access via VPN and security tools like IDS/IPS and AMP. We have integrated with another company recently and used Meraki to link the two businesses together virtually, seamlessly with minimal fuss, and ease of use, access, and management. We also use both the MDM and SDWAN as well.

  • VPN client could be better.
  • Ability to delegate better lower level access for reporting.
  • Reporting functions are sometimes limited.
Remote management is the best feature since we have a nationally distributed WAN. The MDM portion is also great too, we happened to have it when they still had the free 100 option, so have been using it legacied all this time, but it would be well worth it if we happened to need to pay for it.

  • We were able to ditch our old terminal server based WAN.
  • We have added VPN access.
  • Ease of management and insight over the network.
We are able to see and manage the remote LANs we have up and down the east coast of the US with minimal fuss using Cisco Meraki compared to the unmanaged WAN we had prior to that. We have also been able to see the issues with ISPs and notify branches ahead of them calling us regarding issues.
We have been able to use various Cisco products but still be able to manage them and integrate without having to reconfigure a lot of systems. We are also able to monitor traffic and manage the WAN and LANs from a single pane of glass and also integrate two businesses into one single network.
We have been able to deploy this solution in stages at multiple branches and then later on, also connect two different businesses together using Cisco Meraki products too, so it's simple, integrated, and able to scale and grow too. We added High Availability pairing with multiple MXs at the original primary site for redundancy.
We were able to transition very easily from Cisco to Cisco Meraki MX's and connect the LANs into a single easy to manage WAN with remote access VPN and auto VPN between branches to interconnect all networks with minimal fuss but allowing high-speed networking and traffic passing, as well as managed traffic options.

With the cloud management portals of Meraki and Webex our iT administration was easy and able to configure devices for access as well as calling, meetings, messaging with ease.

Much better, seamlessly work well and integrate.

Used to try to use Zoom and MS Teams but ran into issues Inc privacy and compliance. None of these issues with Webex.

I listed the end users which are behind the firewalls at all branches at this point. They are protected internally as well as externally as we also have the VPN licenses to go with the Meraki MX as well. This way no matter where or when, all our end users are protected.

If you have some basic firewall and networking experience it helps, but if you are also able to take the ECMS courses via your Cisco Meraki representative it also helps. There are classes online too, so either way you are covered but the more experience you have the better but even with none to minimal you can still get by as well.

  • Positive - Less travel to Remote sites.
We can easily tell which site has gone down and the physical address of the place. Then we can see if the ISP is having issues or not. No need to go to the remote site to troubleshoot.

We use Cisco Meraki to easily deploy networks to multiple locations around the country. It reduces IT management overhead with the simplicity and single pane of glass administration from the Meraki cloud. It provides a security gateway for our network as well as remote site connections and a remote worker client connections. It is used by all departments in order to access business resources within the company.
  • VPN Setup: extremely easy, do not need any technical knowledge, anyone can do it.
  • Administration: can administer from anywhere you have an internet connection.
  • Reliability: solid reliable product:
  • Setup: setup is extremely easy, no technical knowledge needed.
  • Lack of DNS capability: it is uncommon for a gateway device not to have the ability to be a DNS server, it can act as a DHCP server so why not a DNS server. DNS server would add a lot of value as it would reduce the need for one to be put on the internal network
  • Support: support is atrocious. They do not work to provide you with helpful solutions but provide canned answers without digging into the details of your network or researching your network errors.
It is well suited for small businesses with little to no IT staff. Larger non-profits that do not have an IT staff, or if IT is made up of volunteers (such as churches,) would be a good fit for Meraki MX. Not suitable for large corporations with dedicated IT staff that can manage a much more affordable product that has more features.
  • Less need for IT staff.
I would prefer both Untangle and Fortinet over Meraki. The only downside of those two products is you need more technical network knowledge to manage the product. Untangle and Fortinet both offer more features and cost less than Meraki MX devices. Untangle has better support. Both Untangle and Fortinet take a considerable amount more time to properly configure and manage.

I'm adding Ubiquiti UNIFI to this review, the product has all the features of Meraki at a better price and without the licensing!! Highly recommended over Meraki
Customer support is very good. Quick response times and helpful troubleshooting.

We utilize the Meraki firewall at one of our satellite offices and they provide us the gateway/firewall functionality, as well as opeating a site-to-site VPN connection back to our main office. As well as this, they allow for personal client VPN access, which makes it possible for key members to connect remotely to the company.
  • The cloud management console is incredibly easy to use and very powerful
  • The device looks the part, so for an open plan office it looks good
  • Forms part of the Meraki estate to easily add wireless and switches into the network
  • Very quiet operation, doesn't make nearly as much noise as other firewalls
  • Not cheap to purchase initially
  • While the interface in the cloud is great (and constantly improving) it's aimed towards the less techy, and so certain features are squirreled away.
  • once you have committed you have to pay for the cloud access for them to work. DO your homework on costs
  • Can be difficult to sort issues if your internet connection drops internally
Been great for our satellite office, but looking to expand to others as the multi-wan site to site VPN solution looks great. IT integrates well with the other solutions we have (wifi and switches), so monitoring all aspects of the network are very easy and troubleshooting is a doddle as a result.
  • Cost of purchase and maintenance is high. And it significantly increased recently.
  • This is offset by the ease of use which has a positive ROI effect since staff spends less time configuring and monitoring the firewalls.
  • The web filtering was pivital to assist us keep users "business focused" so is a bonus
  • WatchGuard
We were using WatchGuard firewalls prior to the Meraki firewalls. We selected the Meraki devices because we were impressed with the ease of use from the presentations and were not disappointed. The feature set they offer is good, but there are hidden costs with on-going maintenance that is essential to consider.
2
They are the gateway to the internet as well as the link back to our main office. They now form a critical role in monitoring the network health of the site and make management an easy process with a single pane of glass view of the site. This means that issues are quickly identified and acted on.
2
The skill-sets required for these products are quite low as it is all web based and easy to configure. As the main user, i configured what i needed and then gave another colleague a lower amount of access to be able to monitor for issues (although email alerting is setup so he doesn't require access normally).
  • protection from hackers
  • Interconnectivity between remote sites
  • Web blocking of dodgy websites
  • monitoring
  • Spotting potential network issues, with its web interface you could track network traffic all the way to particular users and so pin point when someone's machine is having issues easily.
  • Further investment in firewalls at other sites, to enable to alternative tunneling solutions they offer, thus meaning we can have seamless access over the backup lines we have would be interesting.
As we have it in place now, we will continue to keep it at our remote sites. Future expansion is something we are reviewing, and may well start with some of the larger switches as they seem to offer good performance and management at a reasonable price. Wireless is also something we're investing in and their devices are great for that.
Yes
We had an old watchguard at the site which was under performing, was loud and didnt have the ease of setup that this offered. As we were able to get this kit operational quickly and its been great since. Its also much quieter than the other device so users are happy.
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Third-party Reviews
Additional features is key here, getting the most out of the device is what we wanted to achieve, not only through connecting it back to our main office but also to better manage the users when they were working on the internet, with the web filtering and antivirus options it has.
We would have potentially re-reviewed watchguard as they have a new raft of UTM features that seem interesting and also offer some new models that would potentially offer an interesting alternative to test against.
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was minimal
  • As we have different model firewalls at other sites the IPSEC configuration (making the devices talk to one another) was the tricky bit but not impossible.
  • Similarly to above, matching what we had with web blocking took a little time as it was a different interface
Good product and simple to use.
No
When we have had issues, their team were quick to assist.
No
-
  • The web interface is very simple and the configuration is very easy, even for more complex requirements
  • If you have an issue that involves loss of internet connectivity, it can be a little hard to resolve as the web interface doesn't work
Good product and requires little prior firewall knowledge to get started on.

  • Meraki MX
We use MX Meraki for our retail branch banking. We use them as easy to manage air droppable systems. With branches spread out, it's important to reduce the cost for administration and remote admin is Meraki's strength.
  • Remote Administration
  • Low cost low CAPEX
  • Easy to use interface
  • Requires internet
  • OPEX may not be best model
Meraki routers are perfect for branch operations.
  • Lowered admin costs
  • More predicted costs
Compatibility was not a huge factor in Merkai selection. Other Cisco products are better positioned for that.
We don't use the Merkai MX for security.
Cisco Merkai has very good SMB capability span. Application performance is on par with other routers in this segment.
No
Since we were implementing SD-Access for Branch deployments the Cisco Meraki evaluation was great. I'm not sure we would have done it differently.

Like most Routers out on the market they're hard to understand and use. Cisco has a great certification program however that can make up for this.
