What is Cisco Umbrella?

Cisco Umbrella, a key component of Cisco's secure access service edge (SASE) architecture, integrates multiple security services in a single, centrally managed, cloud-native solution to secure access to the internet and control cloud app usage. By unifying secure web gateway, firewall, DNS-layer security, threat intelligence, and cloud access security broker (CASB) solutions, Cisco Umbrella helps reduce the resources required for deployment, configuration, and integration. And, by delivering this functionality from the cloud, you can scale to meet the needs of a remote and roaming workforce, shifting network perimeter, and multi-cloud environment — all while simplifying security. Umbrella can be easily integrated with an SD-WAN implementation to provide a combination of performance, security, and flexibility to delight both end users and a security team.

The best insights when implementing is to know your organization. When filter do you want to apply it to all users or group them in different levels so that some have more access to others. What type of websites would you like to block? Know your categories and even if you select a category you can still whitelist a website.

The implementation of the solution is the easiest part of the deployment. No downtime in operation, seamless integration with the network (emails, servers, firewalls, data center). Users report a better functioning of their application and even an outstanding protection outside the offices

The implementation of the Cisco Umbrella client on organizational units was pretty straight forward. The implementation behind the scenes was a bit more trickier but manageable. This was due to needing open the correct channels to allow for the correct communication to the Cisco Umbrella servers. Once everything was up and running, setting up the policies and requiring them was simple.

Umbrella's implementation on premise is incredibly simple. Just point DNS to it, configure a policy and off you go. It gets a bit more complicated on devices that leave your premises but the agent has progressed over the years and is small, has a small footprint and works well. And when you need to report back on individual devices it is quite effective.

The implementation just required us a bit of study because there are a lot of options and configurations available. I believe that the interface could be a bit better, but it works fine. We did an initial setup and only need to do changes when a new demand appears. Other than that, we just keep it running.

We were very satisfied with the implementation of Cisco Umbrella - the process went as well as could have been expected with a project of this scale. Would recommend having dedicated resources from your organization dedicated to the product thru implementation to ensure it works as easily and in as seamless of a manner as possible.

Implementation was not difficult and their instructions were clean and to the point.
It did take me about an hour or 2 to get the 2 linux virtual machines running and configured, but was more simple than other implementations I've done.
I did run into some problems but the Cisco technicians got back to me quickly and got my problems straightened out.
