What is Cisco Umbrella?

Cisco Umbrella, a key component of Cisco's secure access service edge (SASE) architecture, integrates multiple security services in a single, centrally managed, cloud-native solution to secure access to the internet and control cloud app usage. By unifying secure web gateway, firewall, DNS-layer security, threat intelligence, and cloud access security broker (CASB) solutions, Cisco Umbrella helps reduce the resources required for deployment, configuration, and integration. And, by delivering this functionality from the cloud, you can scale to meet the needs of a remote and roaming workforce, shifting network perimeter, and multi-cloud environment — all while simplifying security. Umbrella can be integrated with an SD-WAN implementation to provide a combination of performance, security, and flexibility to delight both end users and a security team.

It is good for whole network protection, and individual PCs with the client. Provide good reporting on where your network is going on the net. One thing I would like is a longer history with the logs 14 and 30 days are too short some times.

Cisco Umbrella most of the time actively blocks high malicious domain by itself which we found very effective to save our employees from phishing campaigns. Another great use of Cisco Umbrella is the web content filtering feature helps by setting up custom rules and block access to non-work-related or potentially harmful sites/URL/domains. So, I think Cisco Umbrella suits pretty well if anyone is trying to protect their organizations from one of the biggest cyber threat these days which is phishing.

Cisco Umbrella is best suited for implementing security at regional gateways that can be used for breaking out the traffic to internet. This saves cost by only implementing this solution on fewer regional based sites, than each individual site. This also helps in handing over the security responsibilities for an internet bound traffic to a well reputed cloud based security service such as Cisco Umbrella.

An important product for securing information

Cisco Umbrella is a cloud-based service, so there is no need to invest in maintaining it, everything is done automatically. This allows us to focus primarily on monitoring malicious sites, leaving us more time for security and other IT tasks. To date, we have not identified anything that could affect our continued use of the service.

We use Cisco Umbrella mostly to protect users' computers. After the pandemics, most of our staff are working from home and using a laptop. For that use case, Cisco Umbrella is really useful because it adds up to the regular antivirus software. We don't use that on servers though. That is because servers have more limited and predictable usage, so we use another software combination to protect that.
