What is CodeSignal?

CodeSignal is a technical interview solution. According to the vendor, companies of all sizes already use CodeSignal’s Pre-Screen and Interview products to tap into underrepresented pools of candidates, increase speed-to-hire, and increase candidate pipeline yield. Studies have shown that companies who use pre-hire screenings see turnover rates reduce by 39%.

CodeSignal uses technology to predict a candidate’s interview performance. CodeSignal’s predictive assessments go beyond testing only for data structures and algorithms, instead they dive deep into subject-specific assessments. Assessments on CodeSignal’s platform support 38+ programming languages, provides an advanced real-world coding environment, coding scores, and utilize a proprietary AI-powered plagiarism check.

Overview of CodeSignal Features

CodeSignal offers tests in 38+ programming languages in a real life coding environment. Per the vendor, their platform is a “flight simulator for developers” that allows candidates to utilize familiar tools to edit, run and debug their code.

CodeSignal offers keystroke playback and an automated plagiarism checker. The ability to play back the candidate’s keystrokes means that their work can be evaluated by multiple members of the hiring team without the hassle of everyone attending the assessment live. Their AI plagiarism checker searches for suspicious results, such as similarities in candidate responses.

CodeSignal’s assessments can assist companies looking to diversify their teams. Companies can replace a resume screen, and the unconscious bias it may bring, with a coding assessment. Using assessment scores allow them companies to evaluate candidates purely on skill rather than any other factor.

Coding Tests

CodeSignal divides different coding tests up into unit test frameworks that assess a person’s technical skills. Examples of unit test frameworks include:

  • NUnit for .NET Framework

  • xUnit or NUnit for .NET Core

  • JUnit for Java

  • Mocha/Chai for JavaScript

  • PHPUnit for PHP

  • unittest for Python

  • RSpec for Ruby

  • UI tests using Galen

  • UI functionality tests using Puppeteer

Assessments can be set to run in a specific language, or can be language agnostic so that the candidate can complete the test in their preferred language.

Testing job-specific skills allow for companies to pre-screen based on candidate skills and helps to improve the interview to hire ratio, since only qualified candidates will be offered interviews.

Coding Interviews

Companies can use CodeSignal for more than just their screening assessments, as the platform also allows for coding interviews and whiteboard sessions. CodeSignal’s coding interview options are suitable for in-person or virtual interviews. Companies can choose interview tasks from a pre-existing library, or can easily import custom tasks from GitHub.

Using CodeSignal’s interview tool, companies can see how candidates interact with the tools they will use every day on the job and make more informed hiring decisions. Team members can interact with the candidate to evaluate their approach to solving problems.

CodeSignal helps me to practice newly learned programming languages. Rather than using commonly used programming languages like Javascript or Python, you can do simple coding using the programming languages you are learning currently. I was learning Rust and Go at that time. Easy as that to learn new programming languages. Especially useful for learning array operations, comparison, functions, and so on.
  • Easy to use and clean UI/UX
  • Preparing interview processes and ready for famous companies' interviews
  • Live coding test and pair coding
  • Job positing from companies who are using CodeSignal
  • Applying jobs using CodeSignal profile
  • Requesting top developers to help me to solve problems (payment using tokens)
I can see most of programming languages supported and a lot of active developers who are using it daily or weekly. It helps to improve coding to the next level and also competing others.
  • Live coding test
  • Direct call interface
  • Screening process of coding
  • Better way to hire

It was awesome to use to review/sharpen my algorithm skills. The screening test was really good for my employer because they could see if I was proficient enough in my coding skills. I particularly enjoyed using it during my interview where the manager could collaborate with me on coding solutions.

CodeSignal was a great asset to the hiring process. It allows for easy and reliable screening of potential new hires. I definitely hope I get to use it in the future as it just works.
  • Providing clear instructions
  • Providing a reliable and intuitive IDE
  • Providing real-time feedback to the user
  • It needs a debugger
If you want a metric to use to filter out candidates it works great, but I would not recommend making hiring decisions purely based on performance here.
  • The IDE
  • The testcases
  • The ability to view results
  • It has saved a lot of time in the initial interview process

It is a seamless experience and I feel CodeSignal helps with the interview experience and in general screening for interviews. The question is rotated often and gives a new coding experience to students. I did solve many challenges a bit more on the code completion would help a lot. The coding problems on the 3rd and 4th question is quite a lot.
  • Solve coding
  • screening of candidates
  • Innovative question and screening
  • Code completion
  • More specific question for company, depending on the type of company
  • Help the company with more candidate overview
The CodeSignal is suited in a scenario where coding challenges or more analytical challenges are used. This is good for a few rounds of screening. They could help candidates with more details on the question and in-person interviews. I feel this would help the coding sector and companies in a way it has not done before
  • Screening
  • Coding problems help
  • Solution to hiring work
  • Hiring process is streamlines
  • Good candidates, technical sound
  • Good coding ethics and faster solution
The CodeSignal is suited in a scenario where coding challenges or more analytical challenges are used. This is good for a few rounds of screening. HackerRank gives good code completion but it does not help with the new innovative questions. CodeSignal inline help with statistics is quite great

Giving Coding exams for different companies

Not sure of the whereabouts of the people with code signal but the skill is logical thinking
  • Coding challenges
  • Logical challenges and thinking
  • time execution and its statistics
  • More personalization as per users
  • More UI specific rounds
  • More design based one on one rounds
  • Add more users
  • Use it as one source stop to get more data
  • Add the details and requirement for Code signal to use and increase better
The overall ease of use and selection does a good job for it. The focus on design and other aspects would be super helpful in reducing the cost overhead of hiring a new person. Even though we need to take interviews still the screening process is reduced drastically. A bit more UI focus would evolve Code Signal
Yes
I am not sure whether or not they have replaced but surely emerged as a big competitor. The coding rounds and online pool of screening are the most labour intensive for many companies and then they are unable to get talents screened. This way it should happen as the codesignal does a majority of the job here for them.

I am The coding rounds and online pool of screening are the most labor intensive for many companies and then they are unable to get talents screened. Hence the product feature of coding and product usability with AI screening the exams provides a lot of help and reputation. The product reputation is also giving a positive outlook to companies using them
If I had to do it again I would keep more question in rotation and provide more rounds of technical challenge. There are more challenge for UI engineer and facebook production engineer roles requiring UI roles and shell scripting and Networking knowledge. These all can be achieved by adding more dynamic rounds to code signal.
I am not sure whether or not they have replaced but surely emerged as a big competitor. Their support system should be good knowing that they are in completion with the best hackerrank. I feel they could do a much better job but I have not used their support much
I have not till now, As I feel it is just working and if more features are added I could think of doing it but for now I would not like to spend more in the coding platform. If they become a one platform for all solution then I might consider doing it.
No
If I would have to answer it, I would say I have not used their support much. Once as the coding problems had multiple solutions I mentioned in an online chat and they were able to provide a quick resolution. But on-call support I have never faced.

I used CodeSignal to do coding assessments for multiple companies. The business problem I'm addressing is to achieve the highest score possible for companies to take me to the next round. This problem can be challenging as each company has its own problem sets for candidates. The scope of my use case is to give the assessment for companies to evaluate my applications.
  • CodeSignal provide thoughtful practice questions and quick responses on my grade.
  • CodeSignal had a good Python application system to work on my assessment.
  • CodeSignal saves my scores!
  • CodeSignal gives me the ease and quick compiler time to work on coding problems
  • CodeSignal could provide more than one practice problem.
  • CodeSignal could provide a more interactive platform for demonstration questions.
  • CodeSignal could provide interactice framework for users
I believe it is well-suited when candidates need to showcase their coding skills.
  • Video demonstration.
  • Python interactive API.
  • Positive in giving quality scores.
Hackerank has a more difficult main coding structure than codesignal

I would allow candidates to choose their problems and give the random mixture of problems between candidates

I think it has the essential knowledge to refresh for staffs before the in-person training.
It was easy on the essential parts, but hard on technical parts.
