Alternatives Considered
The main problem with Visio is the relatively high price and the incompatibility with Apple devices. If you're in this scenario, where price or OS is your problem, I highly recommend giving it a try with the ConceptDraw Diagram. Furthermore, the CDDiagram has the capability of export files in MS Visio, if you have past projects you want to update or review.

Alternatives Considered
We actually purchased ConceptDraw DIAGRAM instead of Visio because it was far cheaper with a similar looking feature set. Since then, I can't think of anything that I have wanted to do with this software that would be better in Visio.

Alternatives Considered
Visio just did not have the resources or shapes that I needed to create clean and beautiful layouts for our business. I stumbled upon ConceptDraw while trying to find something with restaurant and bar shapes. After I purchased it, I was very disappointed with how difficult it was to use and how slow the overall performance was, but after wrestling with it for a few hours I was able to get a great looking layout.
