Users have also highlighted the prompt and helpful customer support provided by DataDog when needed.

In use cases specific to organizations such as Wayfair's Monitoring, Network Ops, and Critical Incident teams, DataDog is utilized to provision, manage, and maintain internal and external sites and applications. These teams rely on the software's dashboard functionality during server or website issues to quickly assess the current state of the environment. Furthermore, integration with ServiceNow allows for storing and indexing DataDog alerts, while additional notification systems ensure widespread communication of alerts to stakeholders.

DataDog proves its versatility by supporting a wide range of integrations, making it suitable for monitoring any service. It is implemented as the APM of choice for organizations seeking insights into metrics such as ELB, container and network stats, memory usage, slow queries, high throughput readings, and request tracing. This centralized solution helps organizations monitor instances in private cloud and AWS environments effectively. It aids in monitoring critical server uptime along with switches and routers while integrating with APIs for event generation and alerting.

The product finds its applicability in diverse scenarios, including monitoring public cloud instances, addressing complex monitoring requirements for IoT and mobile app APIs, and aiding in root cause analysis by monitoring multiple hosts for networking, compute, memory, and application-level metrics. Limited Reporting and Analytics: Several reviewers have mentioned limitations in reporting and analytics capabilities of Datadog. They feel that advanced mathematical and graphing operations are not well-supported, leading them to suggest using another business intelligence tool for these tasks.

Steep Learning Curve: Many users have emphasized a heavy learning curve associated with setting up and configuring Datadog across the entire application or software stack. This upfront work, combined with a lack of intuitive navigation, has made it overwhelming for newcomers to find the right metrics or dashboards unless they know exactly what they're looking for.

Based on user reviews, users commonly recommend the following for Datadog:

  • Try the free trial and evaluate different plans. Users suggest taking advantage of the free trial offered by Datadog to determine which plan best suits their needs. This allows users to explore the features and functionalities of Datadog before committing to a paid subscription.

  • Consider cost and compatibility. Customers advise being mindful of the cost associated with Datadog, particularly when compared to open-source solutions for managing a large number of servers. Additionally, users recommend considering the compatibility of Datadog with serverless styles, as this may impact its effectiveness in certain environments.

  • Conduct a proof of concept (POC) and onboard employees. Reviewers highlight the benefits of conducting a proof of concept (POC) with Datadog before fully integrating it into their infrastructure. They emphasize that Datadog is easy to evaluate and onboard employees, making it a valuable tool for monitoring complex infrastructures. Users also mention that building an alerting and monitoring system is made easier with Datadog's capabilities.

While some users mention that Datadog can be expensive compared to open source alternatives and may have a more complex user interface, they believe that once users become familiar with the app, it is highly efficient. Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

The first reason for selecting Datadog was of course it's pricing which is quite better in terms of competitor like AppDynamics and splunk. Second thing is versatile services which they are offering on one platform which means entire end to end services can be monitor at one platform that too with ease.

It's a one-stop solution for all our needs whereas in other open-source tools, we have an operational overhead to keep and manage the uptime of these tools as well and also manage their versioning, upgrade, and patching cycle. Also if there are any bugs then we have to raise an open source issue and many problems as we have to keep 2 to 3 people aligned to manage the stack.

One of the most important reason is single agent configuration for all kinds of monitoring. It also proved an auto upgrade feature of agents that reduces the overhead. It also provides range of options when it comes to data visualization and dashboards. It also provide tagging capabilities for grouping of entities and integration with third party application and services.

New Relic was a good tool but had really pushy salespeople. They also released a product called infrastructure recently, and it was worse than their previous product (servers). The previous product was also free! Needless to say, we will not be going back to New Relic any time soon.

Easier to set up and integrate with other auxiliary tools. The cost was also a benefit along with self-service capabilities. We could set up Data Dog by ourselves, versus needing to bring additional consulting efforts to setup Dynatrace. Reliability of results (less false alerts and more real alerts when systems were down) were a plus.

Ultimately, Datadog had the most already-built bridges into our existing infrastructure -- third parties that we're using for certain services are far more likely to work with Datadog than other systems. This means that, while expensive, Datadog has done a tremendous amount of work for us and leaves us with a greater ability to see what our systems are doing and why.

Datadog has been harder to setup out-of-the-box compared to its alternatives, although it's graphs and dashboards have been more useful. Other tools handle individual tasks better. For example, Splunk has been the best logging tool I've used, and New Relic is great for CPU and browser monitoring, but DataDog is the best-packaged solution. It has the best pricing model when you have many applications/micro-services and once set up, integrates very easily with other tools.

It has been easier to work with Datadog for all our business needs and get things on their roadmap if we found it lacking. Currently we use a mix of various tools as they were existing prior to Datadog came. We are evaluating new offering like Datadog's latest log management to see if they meet our expectations.
Its definitely growing & maturing at a rapid pace to make it more useful.

  • New Relic and App Dynamic
We are still trying other products, but people still like Datadog. After setting up a dashboard, it's great for monitoring instances on Datadog. Also, the DevOps team had a good time setting up Datadog. It means Datadog was way easier to set up compared to those others.

Geckoboard has nice dashboard options, however their third party system support isn't as strong as Datadog. Geckoboard did not support all the various server and development systems we use, whereas Datadog did. Also, Datadog has better alerting and monitoring options than Datadog. Geckoboard was mainly geared toward dashboards and we needed more.

Datadog empowers us to create dashboards and visualize the state of our infrastructure in real time. It gives us control over what we want to view and how. The graphs provide deep insight into trends and anamoly detectives. These features are lacking in some of the other monitoring solutions out there.

Datadog visually is up there with the rest of these products. For some projects I use datadog and others I use different open source tools. For our production environment we use datadog and with Puppet the installation on each of our servers makes it quick and easy to install. For non-production servers we use other tools.
