Use Cases and Deployment Scope
XtremIO was originally purchased to provide a high-performance storage platform for our critical systems. It is being used across the entire organization as a storage option in our VMWare environment for high-performance datastores. We also use it for some FC attached storage for our physical servers which run AIX.
Pros and Cons
  • The storage array is very fast. The performance is great.
  • It integrates well into the other ancillary products EMC offers.
  • It takes up a large amount of room in the datacenter. A dedicated rack is required for even a minimal configuration.
  • The management interface is a bit slow and feels dated, but it gets the job done.
Likelihood to Recommend
XtremIO would be useful for any production storage environment, or even any staging or development environment where performance mattered. It would not be ideal to use for backup storage.

  • It has met our performance expectations.
Alternatives Considered
At the time the EMC was selected due to the existing relationship with EMC and the maturity of their product compared to the other vendor's options. However now that the maturity gap has been closed and the storage wars have proven which companies will remain for the foreseeable future, we have decided to move away from the XtremIO and go with an alternate storage company due to the price and cost of ongoing support. The EMC product is still a great product, I just find it too expensive to purchase and maintain in today's competitive marketplace.

This was one area of real disappointment. EMC support was very slow to schedule work like installations and upgrades. Break/fix support was fairly standard. After the Dell merger, things have started improving but there is a lot left to be desired here.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We refreshed our traditional storage solution from Hitachi VSP to Dell EMC XtremIO Flash storage part of our converged consolidation project. We were pleased with the I/O effects and noticed significant improvements to our mission critical applications. We were so impressed that we refreshed our lower/testing environment to XtremIO.
Pros and Cons
  • Its strong features like de-duplication and compression.
  • Consistent Performance ie high performance with consistently low latency
  • Lower environment refresh activity
  • Its expensive but worth it
Likelihood to Recommend
I specifically like de-duplication, compression, high I/O, thin storage allocation, snapshot (to refresh our lower env from production systems). Because of XtremIO we are now able to create instant copies with space-saving data de-duplication technology for our lower environment with easy refresh/restore operations.

  • Ease of management is the best feature. You can see performance stats as per your needs
  • Cost
Alternatives Considered
I/O delievered by XtremIO can't be compared with any other flash storage. Existing relationship with vendor and pressure to improve I/O bottleneck was the key objective

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We're using XtremIO flash storage for our Citrix Virtual Desktop Infrastructure as well as storage for our Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases hosted on VMware versions 6.0 and 6.5
Pros and Cons
  • The deduplication and compression is very good. This especially helps for VDI applications.
  • It is easy to setup and map hosts to volumes.
  • The new HTML5 console is much better than the older Java.
  • It would be good to have better wizards for frequently performed actions
  • VMware integration could be better, so we could report on how many iops a particular guest VM was using.
Likelihood to Recommend
XtremIO is particularly well suited to VDI and database usage.
Return on Investment
  • Using XtremIO has made our VDI much more palatable for users.
