What is Equatio?

Equatio is an equation editor used to create digital, accessible math, and is designed to save time, lower stress and eliminate frustration.

Equatio aims to create accessible learning experiences in math and science, so that students get choice in the tools that they need to succeed. This includes having math read aloud, using 'math to speech' and visualizing math problems with geometric shapes, manipulatives, and dynamic graphs. Equatio also provides students and teachers with a collaborative and digital space to allow students to work freely and show their thinking.

Equatio also aims to remove barriers to inclusive math, helps to create independent learners, and lets students choose to engage with math and science in a way that suits them best.

With our students using Chromebooks, it was very difficult for them to be able to digitally input math and science characters. Equatio provides a simple interface where they have multiple options on how to input- written on device, written on mobile device, autofill, typing, etc. Once the interface loads, it is very intuitive. As well, it works with Google Forms which made it a lot more feasible for our math and science departments do to online quizzes. This became a key extension during the pandemic and has continued to be used since our return.
  • Input from mobile device
  • Autofill equations
  • Input math and science characters in Google Docs and Forms
  • Mobile app to work with math space
This is a must have extension for any paperless environment for math and science. The ability to input math and science characters without having to use latex has made digital math input a viable option for our younger students. It does require some initial training but the students did pick it up very quickly.

  • Reduced cost on printing
  • Increased ability to go paperless
Always very responsive and have been very helpful
This allowed us to increase students inputting math digitally for assessment and for student work. Since it has handwriting recognition, it allowed students to write the math but the teacher be able to easily read it after it converted the text into clear characters. As well, the ability to go back and make changes made life much easier for them to continue to make updates to assignments and activities afterwards.

Equatio is used mostly to create exams by the curriculum math coaches. Some students use it to respond, but not many.

  • Very expensive
  • Not used heavily
  • Great during Covid but not used heavily now
Support is great. Would love to experience better data analytics to determine the effectiveness of the product. This is a major pitfall because it is ultimately the reason why the product is failing.
Student accessibility in reading equations in particular for special education students who have a difficult time understanding how to read the equations.
Equatio is okay, but not great.

I am an itinerant teacher who teaches teachers how to embed assistive technology into their lessons. Our board has purchased a district license. The goal is for teachers and students to use this tool to access curriculum that might be inaccessible for some without it - and for all students to be able to use the tool to enhance their learning
.
  • teachers appreciate the form creator (though it has limitations)
  • interactive manipulatives are great
  • assigning assignments is so simple and easy
  • in the forms creator sometimes regardless of the level the questions are difficult or not exactly what was asked for
  • using the tool is not very easy for students - it is difficult for them to show their thinking without following many steps - students who require this tool are often struggling academically and it would be great if it could be simpler
  • The coordinate plane shape can only do up to 13 ticks before the labels make it unreadable (and stroke width 1 doesn’t work when selected)
For teacher use it is a great tool for creating content and assigning it - for student use it is complicated at times and too many steps to accomplish what they are hoping to.
  • online manipulatives
  • teacher creating of content
  • voice to text features for students with writing difficulties
  • text to speech features for students who have difficulty reading what is asked of them in the questions on the assigned work

  • not many teachers are using it as far as I have seen - there are other tools available to them that do the same things
  • teachers who do use it enjoy the slide format of activities and how they can assign easily to students
  • teachers would prefer to have the results and progress of the work assigned appear in the Google classroom instead of having a separate dashboard
whenever we have a question the team is prompt with an email response
some students regularly use it to insert the math for assignments - when fine motor is difficult their work is easily read by the teacher and often lined up properly (some stacking of math problems don't line up properly - addition, subtraction and multiplying of 2-3 digit numbers)
